Alternator removal TDV8

Have finally managed to find time to change it. Not too bad a job to do but awkward. I removed the upper shroud cover & all the pipe work across the front of the engine so as to aid being able to see the thing. The next thing off was the fan (36mm spanner needed & left hand thread) I then took all the lower covers off & removed the drivers wheel arch liner. I then removed the belt from the auto tensioner. I then disconnected the wiring from the unit including the short positive feed from the starter then unbolted the Alternator securing bolts. Then struggled like hell to get it past the turbo air pipe until I discovered if you twist it the lugs dont catch & hey presto it popped out. Total time so far about 2.5 hours & turbo & rads & all that associated work not required.Putting it all back should be a bit faster as I wont be working it out as I go along. Very Happy Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

Did you have to remove the grille and front bumper to make access easier?

I had mine replaced by the Dealer and it was an expensive job because of the numbers of hours it takes. Discovery 4 HSE

No with the rads still in place it would be a bit silly to take them off. Space is tight but the awkward part is getting the Alternator out past the turbo pipe work. Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

Good to know Thumbs Up

Nothing needed draining/ removing except turbo hoses and the plastic covers then?

I see there are two types listed for tdv8 depending on the belt/pulley type. I wonder if one is more prone to failure than the other? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Only coolant as obviously all the rad pipework gets in the way but not the header tank that I have read people remove, I really could not see why Very Happy I think the difference is in the belts & pulleys I was offered a 6pk or 8pk Alternator /belts. However the 6pk belt is a lot shorter. until I ordered the Alternator I did not realise there was a choice.Luckily I could still read my belt numbers & it is Ok but at £18.50 I think for a new belt seemed mad not to change it as well Worse things happen at sea! I have realised that nothing in the engine bay of mine is simple to do or get at but with small hands, a large hammer & plenty of expletives any thing can be achieved Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

Put it all back together this morning hardest part was putting the nut on top of the main battery feed on top of the Alternator. Dropped it twice & wasted half an hour with a boroscope & magnet trying to retrieve it. Now charging at 14.6 v & am hoping the battery is ok after being totally flattened, so I may invest in a new one before the frosts start. I would estimate with tea brakes & the odd cigar about 6hrs in total Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!
