TDV8 3.6 early cut-off problem during fuel fill-up

Hi,

I've had my '08 3.6 TDV8 for 18 months now and today I was filling up the tank at my local Jet station here in Germany, taking advantage of a lower diesel price. The tank was already half full and so I expected to get around 45l into it but it cut off at around the 39l mark and I just could not get any more in. After firing up the needle pointed half way between 3/4 and full.

This is the second time I have experienced this in the last 18 months (same station, can't remember if it was the same pump). Usually the tank fills to the brim no problem. Anyone else experience this and know what the cause may be? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

Happens to me all the time. The fuel back pressure caused by the fuel filler pipe in the car is always causing fuel nozzles to cut out on me. I find I have to carefully regulate the fuel flow to get the tank full. A real pain but there doesn't seem to be a solution. 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Baltic Blue MY11

I have noticed this too, it drives me crazy sometimes. Faster filling pumps seem to make it worse so Baron has a point I think. It would be nice to know of a fix though as my previous TD6 never did this.

Yep bugs me every time I fill up too but after Stan's suggestion about other threads I did a quick search and found these:

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic16891.html

2nd one includes part of a technical service bulletin that is supposed to help but someone on the first thread suggested it hadn't fixed it for them. Current: RR L322 2010

Turning the nozzle up side down does work but I think there is also a TSB to fix this issue, it has been mentioned in a previous thread but I think it was a complex fix involving removal of the tank. 2021 P400 Silicon Silver AB

Jez000, any other details on the TSB?

I know that turning the nozzle upside down doesn't work for me. I found that it seems worse when you have the nozzle inserted further in the filler hole. It can be frustrating at times and mine definitely seems worse with fuel pumps with higher/faster fuel throughput.

Jez000, just noticed the links above, so will check out the TSB's in question.

I have the same problem with mine. Turning the nozzle upside down does work. I also bung the filler cap in the handle to keep it on so I can stand around watching instead of holding the nozzle. It still cuts out automatically when full. Thumbs Up

At BP stations I never have a problem regardless of the angle of the nozzle. At Shell I always have to turn it upside down. Perhaps BP has a slower fill rate? 2012 5.0L S/C

Thanks for all the replies and Ian for the links to the other threads. I have always pumped the fuel at about half speed as it always cuts off after a couple of seconds at full speed. Even so it usually fills the tank up full so I just wondered why it wouldn't fill completely on those two occasions. I'm reluctant to pump any slower in case it doesn't cut off at all and the tank overflows (had that happen once before, suddenly felt I had wet feet... Rolling Eyes)

The TSB states "The internal diameter of the filler neck has shrunk over time." How the hell does that happen? What's it made of?

I haven't tried fueling with the nozzle in the 9 o' clock position so I will try that next time. Also haven't noticed the misfuel device in the tank neck but I'll check for that, too. Will the pump still cut off with the nozzle at 9 o' clock? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

Pump nozzle at 12 o clock works best for me. Still cuts off when full. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
