rear wash/wipe woes

Folks

Thanks for all the helpful info that I read before registering on this site including this thread...

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic884-30.html

I'm scratching my head a bit because the rear wash/wipe system just packed in. First the wiper stopped working (but the washer carried on for an hour) and now it's all stopped. The problem may have occurred over time but I don't use the Range Rover nearly as often as I should so probably haven't noticed.

As per the circuit diagram attached....

I have checked fuse #10 in the boot. It's ok and tests to 13.8V (both sides of course)
I have checked fuse #41 in the glove box and the small six-pin plug onto the wiper ECU Pin #3 (the pink wire) tests at 13.8V. That's C0835-3 on the picture

So far so good.

However.....

The big red and white wire to pin #2 of the 3-pin plug (C0388-2 on the diagram) shows no voltage.
Pushing the wash/wipe stalk to turn on the rear wiper shows no signal on pins #1 or #2 (C0835-1 & C0835-2 in the picture)
I've tested against both the big brown earth to the socket and chassis earth.
Pushing the stalk right back to activate the washer doesn't produce any motor whirring noise ...and of course no water.

Now before I start tearing the car apart doing wiring continuity checks is there something that I've overlooked here?

I have tried a different motor/ecu unit and that doesn't work either.
I have tested with the tailgate both open and closed.

I'm new to these machines so I'm guessing that I've done something dumb - any ideas would be greatly appreciated! I find it hard to believe that a 2.5sqmm cable would have broken or melted somewhere without pulling the fuse ... so is some other devilish electronic unit shutting it down?

In a word ... Help!

cheers

Dave

If Fuse 10 at the rear board has +13.8V either side of it but there is no voltage on C0388-2, the 2.5mm red/white cable supplying C0388-2 must be disconnected from the terminal on the rear fuse board for some reason or the cable must be cut somewhere between Fuse 10 and C0388-2. I find it hard to believe the cable is damaged however.
I would test for continuity of the Red/White cable at the fuseboard and C0388-2 before doing anything else.
Pull the fuseboard forward and have a look. Thumbs Up

Thanks. Good idea. BTW I've been trying to type for the last 5 minutes but couldn't stop laughing at your avatar. Excellent! When I lived overseas that was what I missed about British humour. You should send the photo to Private Eye.

Am I right in expecting a 12 volt signal in the small 6-pin connector's pins #1 or #2? Looking at the RAVE info it seems that there's a direct wire (i.e. not on the CAN bus) connection from the body control module to the wiper stalk and then to the little ECU on the rear wiper. The spec mentions "testbook T4" but I'm still trying to fathom my way around the documentation

cheers

Dave

I wouldn't worry about anything until you check the Red/White cable for continuity. It should have 12.6-13.8V on it all the time the ignition is on. The rest is much too complicated.

I would check the wiring in to the tailgate, Common place for wiring to break as it constantly moves as it comes out of the car into the tailgate. Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

Aha. I need to double check this in the morning when the light is better and I can be doubly sure, but a quick test with the ohmmeter indicates there to be no continuity from fuse #10 in the boot to the red & white wire at the wiper.

Unless it's broken at the back of the fuse panel there is indeed a broken wire up there somewhere.

Having taken the fuse block out, the red & white wire had come adrift at the multi plug attaching it to the loom. It looks like the last few strands had overheated. I'm not sure how this would have happened since I've never had the component out before.

The motor on the tailgate has apparently seized up as the new one works fine, so once I've fitted it I'll pull the old one to bits and see what went wrong

Thanks for your help.
