I think I saw one of the members say he paid around £500 -£550 for his recon turbo. and there is a instructional post on how to change it yourself on here and the same member uploaded the video to youtube. What was wrong with your turbo? Bushy

Turbo's contain a lot of oil, they need to as they get very very hot.. the Main Oil Gallery (MOG) is normally directly fed to the turbo. Of course if a seal has failed then parts that are not meant to have oil will fill up, however that would normally result in black oily smoke from exhaust.. not white grey.

white/grey is normal when engine is a little cold but if it's excessive then its normally water or coolant sometimes if its a little blue then it could be fuel, but that's normally in petrol's..

I would guess from your symptoms (and having never stripped one of our turbo's) that the seal on the exhaust side has failed, as if it was on the intake side the oil would be getting burnt in the combustion chamber and you would have a blue/black smoke.
If the main dealer guys have said the turbo is goosed, it most likely is; however £3100 is just nuts! the refurb units will be just as good if installed properly ((and primed) don't forget to prime a turbo!) even if the refurb had some massive failing it would be covered for at least 12 months surly??

Were there any lead symptoms to this happening or did it just go pop overnight? Bushy
