Smart Key on 2010MY - Question

So, with the keyless entry you can start the car with the key in your pocket.

What happens if the engine is running, you get out and walk away and stay away from the car, does it ever switch itself off? Discovery 4 HSE

When I rented the D4 (similar smart key system) they said: no it doesn't. so in theory a thief can drive off with you holding the key Smile Doesn't make sense to me but I haven't tested it. I'd expect a transponder key to have that type of car jacking functionality built into it !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Been there with the kuga...missus drove into town, jumped out and i drove to the driving range. Got there, stopped car then realised she had the key in her bag. Couldn't lock car and couldn't start it to drive back to her either...she had to taxi to me with the key...not fun... '08 Audi S6 Avant 5.2 V10 with Milltek non-resonated. Vrrrrrrmmmmmph

I can confirm that you can keep going until you...stop...or run out of fuel!

On the JLR cars, you get some kind of 'smart key not in range' type message on the dash when the key is outside the vehicle with the engine running.

Daft design, so someone could drive off in it till they run out of fuel, which could be 500 miles away!, then strip the car or just stick it in a container heading for Russia.

Smartkeys are great but make it very easy to forget they are there (I just leave mine in my pocket all day).

On Monday though I gave a colleague a lift to the train station in her car (a Landcruiser also with smart key). Got in, drove her there, returned to the office, switched off the engine but then realised no key, so couldn't lock the car. It was in her handbag, on the train, Neither of us thought....

Problem 2 - when I drive my wife's non-smart key bmw I've now developed a habit of trying to start the engine without putting the key in the slot and leaving the key in when I get out.

Great for your own car but quickly become habit forming (or maybe it is just my age?)

Must just be an age thing Wink

To be honest it's like starting the car with a key anyway. Your legally bound not to leave it unattended while the engine is running, yes I know some of us have all parts of country as our back gardens but still, one day you'll leave it running and go back inside for a while to get ready and find some sod has been out walking their dog, seen it, checked it out and driven off with it. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Guy in my work left his smart key in his Mercedes M class in the underground garage at work; albeit he did turn the car off, someone got into the garage (building is multiple occupancy) and someone drove of with the car Whistle It was a company car, insurance refused to pay out and he now drives a Vauxhall thing and owes the lease company a whack of cash!

.... moral of the story, smart keys seem like a bad idea.... why are companies creating solutions to problems which don't exist Whistle Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White

Or my other faux pas in a Lexus hybrid with smart key. Park up (in silence as petrol had cut out), get out of car, lock having forgotten to press the engine off button. Of course eventually the petrol engine kicks back in and had someone not spotted it I'd have returned to an empty tank and flat battery...

I see all the convenience in the smart key solution but not programming in that when the car doesn't "see" the key anymore it switches off makes no sense at all. That is just stupid IMHO.

I would love to walk up to my car, no having to grab for the fob because it opens when I get within 2 meters. Then sit down and start it at the press of a button and when I walk out without switching it off, it does that as soon as I am more than 2 meters away from the car. This in case you are in a rush (accident, need the loo, whatever) or in the case of a car jack.

Can you imagine (like that idiot in NZ) that left his car at the petrol station, with his baby in it, running to keep the AC going and some nobhead crackpot stole it ??? Now the nobhead needs to be keelhauled anyway but that should not be possible. If no one is left in the car (adult I mean) then you take the kid out, close the car and lock and these smart keys should make that easier so you can keep an eye on your kid better.

Smart key MY BEHIND, stupid engineering. If you can't make the functionality work properly don't use it in real life. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

it seems like smart keys require smart people to use them...

tbh there's nothing like sticking it in and turning it.. ... - .- -.

I agree they are a load of pants.

I have one in the disco. Cant get my head round it! Press to open, get in press the button to start, the amount of times i have tried to switch the car off with the remote not the dash button......

Keys peeps, pretty sure they are the answer to all this daft newfangledness. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
