forgot to add that the misfire happens most often when under load, meaning when accelerating. Also another fault code that came up is that for the Electrically Heated Thermostat - not sure if its only one fault that is now showing as a fault of all these other things

Hi vnitos,
My problem has not occurred since. Some of the guys on here suggested it might be the fuel pump in the tank, due to a common problem with them when the fuel level gets to a quarter tank and below. I have simply tried to keep my fuel level around the half way mark or above. Since doing this I have not experienced the problem again. It might not have been the problem of course, but the cost of a new fuel pump puts me off replacing it if it is not the cause. Hope this helps and you can sort your problems out. These FullFat RR's are beautiful vehicles, but can be quite temperamental and can empty the wallet very quickly. "I got him boxed in like a turtle's pecker!".

Fuel was at 3/4 level when misfire happened - I try never to run the car below 1/4 tank.

Some other issues: exterior temperature gauge shows much higher reading than the actual reading - at some stage 39degrees celcius - and one could hear the airconditioner struggling. Not sure what this could be.

Last night we took the air filter (BMc) off and cleaned the maf sensor, thereafter the vehicle revved up quite nicely with no symptoms of misfiring. Must admit the air filter looks like it needs decent cleaning/replacing.

My son used the car to run some errands this morning and according to him it ran perfectly, so I'm hoping problem is gone now

Relief about misfire being gone was shortlived. Used the car today for the first time since I last posted (wife used it) and found that it still does the same, especially at idle and when cold.

Gave it a bit of stick on the open road and got to 16 km/h before I lift off, which was surprising considering the misfire being there, however did not feel/hear the misfire when I gave it stick. Got home switched it off and no misfire. To try to get rid of the misfire I'm thinking of doing the following

- clean maf sensor again
- check for any signs of oil around spark plug area
- check for loose connections/hoses
- replace fuel filter
- replace air filter
- replace plugs

Btw the car was serviced about 2500kms ago by an indie and fuel pump and filter was replaced in July 2012, done about 20000 kms since then

Looking at the to do list, that sounds like a sensible approach. You may consider replacing the MAF sensor iso of just cleaning but after you did all the other stuff.

Have you been running on "clean" petrol and tried injector cleaner as well ??

When I had the fuel pump changed, I also had the tank cleaned, injectors, inlet manifold etc. I didn't have misfires, I had idling issues, revs dropping a little too far when releasing the accelerator and that sort of stuff. Since the replacement and big clean up it runs super smooth. I replaced the MAF first, it didn't help (cleaned several times before that so now I have a spare MAF Smile ).

Anyway, good luck. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

On way home from Pub tonight, about midnight (one pint only) car running fine. Traveling on meandering country lane, on the flat, when power suddenly lost and engine stops when put into neutral after coasting to a stop. Engine restarts OK but with the engine warning light on. Travel a few hundred meters and stops again. After a few stop/starts I come to a hill with a fairly steep gradient and it finally gives up the ghost completely. Get my good wife to come out a mile or two, in her car, with a can of petrol (lawnmower usage). About 3 or 4 liters put into tank and after a couple of attempts the motor fired up hesitantly and made it home OK. By the time we got home the engine was running sweetly. At the time the fuel remaining range was indicating just below 60 miles with the fuel warning light coming on during attempts to restart car. I have run the tank down previously to 30 miles remaining with no apparent problem! Checking through the forum I see a lot of folk like to keep their fuel tank levels above a quarter which I have never done with any other car I have run! I take it that the engine warning light (steady amber) will reset itself eventually, or does it need plugging in to a code reader and resetting? Previous cars:

Trawling round other posts looks like it is to do with the shape of the fuel tank and duff fuel transfer (Jet) pump.
Engine light still on so will have to get that sorted. The bog standard code reader (OBD II) I have used on other cars doesn't want to link up with the RR. Engine running fine but well annoyed that the only way that you will know if the pump is not working is if you run out of fuel! Well done Land Rover for a stupid design flaw! Previous cars:

some feedback

have done the following:

- replaced spark plugs which after only 2500 kms were almost done - most probably due to the car running on a lean mixture
- replaced air filter (was able to put original air filter housing in - remember we did the 2007 front end conversion)
- replaced petrol filter

BUT misfire is still there

what remains to be done is

- replace MAF sensor
- replace exhaust sensors (based on rangerovers.net advice)
- replace fuel pump (not sure if it could be gone after only 20 000kms)

hopefully it will then be sorted

What then to do when it is sorted - should I keep it or sell it?

have you looked at the coils? mine had a misfire after washing and had managed to get water into the Coil pack area. removed coils and plugs and tissue paper in the holes and removed all the moisture. when back together it ran like new. Do you have any diagnostics? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Diesel injector cleaner in petrol cars, Gaz ? (only curious - is this an option for the petrolheads as it is better than using a petrol injector cleaner?) .

Feedback time

Indie replaced coil of no 4 spark plug and voila! Misfire is gone. Whilst the car was there he replaced the bmc air filter, fitted due to 2007 conversion, with the original housing and air filter. Intake noise is now much quieter.

Thanx for the advice given - really appreciate it.
