To SC or not to SC.........

Hi All,

I've been kicking the tyres of a nice 2005 FFRR SC.

It appeals because:
1) the Jag 4.2 engine and ZF box is a better (but thirstier) package than my TD6
2) being a 55 plate the tax is "only" £280 pa versus a 2006 onwards @ £490 pa

But...........

I've heard that the FFs with the ignition key higher up, integrated into the dash, near the indicator stalk (is it 2007MY onwards?) are a much more reliable proposition.

Am I right or should I give this SC serious consideration?

All views welcome! Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Plenty on here have the facelift S/C models. The engine is the best element, but the improved interior is a distinct bonus. Thumbs Up Si. <This is my name.

The SC engines are bullet proof (the engine and transmission oil to water coolers aren't but they are easily replaced) and the gearboxes are quite sturdy. So from the first models on they are GOOD.

I would have preferred a MY 2007 onwards as well due to terrain response etc. but there wasn't a good option available.

I'd go SC again in a heartbeat (preferably a 5.0 next time), the power is addictive (and I love big powered cars and bikes, I don't have a Kawa ZZR-1400 for nothing).

The usability factor of the SC is high, they are easy to use for sedate cruising and hooning and everything in between Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hi All,

I'm going to go ahead with this SC, it belongs to a friend of a friend who is willing to sell at a price that I simply cannot ignore. All advice welcome on this please:

I currently have a 2003 TD6 with 125k miles and it drives perfectly.

The 2005 (2006MY) SC has covered 110k miles, it belongs to a friend of a friend who has had a change of personal circumstances so I know it's history pretty well, full LRSH. The warranty has just expired so he's had everything done that it ever needed including a recent EAS pump.

I only do around 6k miles per annum so fuel cost isn't a massive concern.

I'm going to take a look at the weekend and will check the usual gearbox changes - up / down / high / low range etc.

So is the 4.2 SC / ZF combo that much better than what I have or am I swapping one huge risk for another one?!

Is the ZF 'box likely to go pop? (million dollar question I know!) Is there anything I could / should do to prevent it doing so?

Thanks in advance chaps! 2006 4.2 SC

Have a look at my gearbox issues and you know what can go wrong.

The oil to coolant heat exchangers (transmission oil and engine oil) are prone to fail in the earlier cars. With my car both went within a month. The problem is internal corrosion in my case aggravated by the bloody mechanics using water iso coolant. That is all solved now (although I still had some sludge come out last week).

The problem with my box was the coils and that is the first thing the automatic transmission shop I called in the Netherlands replaces if a box comes in with problems. It is still a rare occurrence as this 6 speed (used in many makes and models) seems to be incredibly good and reliable. I was just unlucky I guess.

Engine (as before), I have not read any issues with it sofar.

I suggest to do an oil and filter change. Mine had some minor gear change lags and they went away after that. The other problem was not related to any of this. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

my s/c is much nicer to drive than my old td6, the gearchanges are smoother and the engine noise very quiet..

there's an excellent detailed buyers guide by pld118 [Ryan] who happened to buy a s/c as well.. ... - .- -.

Thanks Guys.

@Eugene - Yes, your gearbox posts are what has got me thinking actually! What are the symptoms of the heat exchangers failing? Is it worth swapping as preventive maintenance? Big, expensive job? 2006 4.2 SC

Hi, the SC in whatever guise is a formidable and brilliant car.

Many people say the engines are very reliable and that the overall package is hard to beat, if you are prepared to accept that properly maintaining one cannot/ should not be done on the cheap and also accepting the fuel consumption (based on your estimated mileage it doesn't seem to be an issue, even if you pay for you own fuel).

The gearbox on this model, as I understand it, should be 'serviced' (old oil & filter out and new oil and filter in at around 100k miles and what you don't want to see during the change is a look of metal shavings/ a glitter look in the existing oil). Many people have this preventative service work done around 60 to 70k miles in the hope of prolonging gearbox life. More knowledgeable people than me will confirm, refute or expand on this subject better than me.

Fair to say that my wife's SC has had its share of challenges since April but as it stands, we are glad we stuck with it because it is a superb car.

Just because the warranty has expired it might still be renewable/ they might just ask you to submit the car for a 'Health Check' for a nominal fee. We would not have a car like this without a proper warranty.

You've obviously got a RR so will be alert to many issues but if you've not read it, please do take note of the issues that have affected our car since April because it cost a lost of money to make good. Whilst we might have been unlucky it seems you would be buying privately with less recourse:
