Diesel or Petrol Reliability - Your views appreciate

Fellow Forumees

Simple question, is a diesel more reliable than a petrol? Reason for the thread is that I had a 2001 Disco 2 V8 for 85,000 miles with no issues apart from usual servicing, have had a 2004 TD6 for similar mileage and no end of issues, never had a FFRR Petrol but am erring toward one, is it just an anomaly or does anyone believe the petrols are more reliable or Disco 2s were better built, Thanks Very Happy 2013 L405 Autobiography Baltic Blue

i would have thought that with the correct maintenance and tlc both would be equally reliable.. ... - .- -.

Stan, good point however both cars had maintenance done as and when they needed it at main dealers in accordance with guidelines etc. I know it is probably an unusual one as all cars are built differently and someone with 2001 Disco 2 V8 could have had a nightmare and a TD6 could be a dream. However I want a new FFRR and seriously considering an SC, trying to convince myself Very Happy 2013 L405 Autobiography Baltic Blue

Years and years ago diesels were more reliable. They didn't have the very unreliable ignition systems of petrol cars of those days - just a mechanical injection system.

Spin on to the present and diesels are very complex and particulate filters are proving to be an industry wide problem.

Petrols look quite simple in comparison.

Having said that, my TD6 has been ok apart from the injectors.

Kurt, that is my issue, years of petrols with no real issues now last 8 years with diesels!! yes slightly less in fuel costs however, I now believe false economy, backed up by maintenance costs, still have my old 4.2 Audi S6 that costs me nothing bar servicing and fuel, want an SC so trying to convince myself Very Happy 2013 L405 Autobiography Baltic Blue

have had 4 range rovers. 3 petrol 1 diesel All about the same reliability. Engine wise to date, trouble with none of them, petrol or diesel. Touches many trees quickly!

The problem is mainly with service intervals being massively extended. Diesels are often thought of as super robust low maint units and they aren't, they still need looking after, especially with the turbos and tight tolerances of modern ones. Servicing a car early is the best way to make it last longer and so many ignore this and let it stretch on to 20k or so before a basic service Sad

The FF engines have the advantage of using a timing chain compared to a lot of cars so thats one headache sorted but still all fluids should be flushed every 3years and often aren't.

Any car can be poorly maintained and be a money pit to future owners and buying on condition and care from previous owners is the best you can do Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

They are quiet aren't they ,,,,,,,, until Very Happy

The AJV8 in it's different guises dose seem to have a good reputation for reliability all I have herd about is one or two cam chain tensioner issues on the NA engine .

It does seem fairly common for people to move on from a TD6 and think to them selves " I must have another FullFat "
and go and get a Supercharged . 2008 MY Supercharged

Like Stan, my first FFRR was a TD6. Whilst it was fault-free, and a great reliable car, my petrol (BMW 4.4 VCool is far superior, both in performance and sound! Also, both BMW units are fairly bomb-proof. I believe petrol has the edge in terms of lower costs when things do go wrong!

They put Diesel engines in trucks tractors and PSV's for a reason, reliability and economy over many miles. That said I have both petrol and diesel RR's and as long as they are serviced and looked after there seems to be very little in reliability between the two. What does make a difference is people messing about with cheap tuning boxes, cheap maps and generally flucking an engine up for the next owner.

If you can find a good vehicle with known history and know its not been tinkered with all should be well. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Now at 140k with TD6 (says something in its self), patchy history up to 86K, then with me for remainder. Only issue with engine in all that time was the oil particulate filter clogging up, which only really came about because it is not listed as serviceable in Rave, so I didn't know it was there! This forum sorted that out!

So tractorish yes, but reliable with it. That said, other than the peripherals on the petrol engines (PCV hoses in particular) reliability of engines of both types seems on a par (original TD6 + 4.4 V8 ) based upon what I pick up on the forum, but this relies on regular servicing and attention.

As far as the SC goes, all these boy racers on here will have thrashed the t*ts off them Twisted Evil .
