Standard time to repair

Hi,

Hope someone can help, just moved from a P38 that finally died at 280k miles to a new'ish L322. Never had a problem with the P38 and already day two and the L322 breaks down Evil or Very Mad

So now I'm off to get this fixed and wanted to find out what RangeRover estimate the standard time is do the following two jobs;
Diagnose a faulty alternator
Replace a faulty alternator

By the way this is for the TDV8.

Thanks
Conor

Hi, much like you I moved from a very reliable P38 to a TDV8.

Alternator replaced this year. Battery light came on and off sometimes stayed off. Took straight to garage next day as did not want new Land Rover fitted battery ruined as well.

Alternator identified as faulty and replaced. (No charge listed)

Done at trusted main Land Rover dealer. Job was 3.40 hours So labour was £314.50 Alternator was £239.17. So cost was £553.67 + Vat which came to £664.40 all in.

£650 is what I have been quoted by my local stealer for a new alternator on my TDV8. Mine just has a whine from the bearings, so not getting it done till it fails 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

Thanks for the feedback, so far have been quoted €350 in parts which sounds about right but the labour is estimated at 7 hours which just sounds wrong.

Will go back and get them to check their numbers!!!

Thanks
Conor

Sounds like they are quoting for the Sport TDV8 which I think is a more complex job beocause of space, body etc.. Others will advise if that is correct or not.

I seem to remember that £650 all in is about the going rate at a md, little bit less at a indy, its quite an involved job as you have to remove the rh turbocharger aparently which also invlolves removing the starter motor and a cat.

Dunno if there is a "simple" way to do it, but when you look at the amount of stuff to take off first on rave its no wonder its an expensive job......

It is one of the achilles heels of the car, but once done it should be good going forwards (and backwards).

I am waiting for mine to fail at the moment........... Hope it wont do it in france next week, no symptoms as yet though. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's all done from the front. No need to go near the turbo's or exhaust...

As i said not sure if there is an easy way, thats the way rave says to do it for a tdv8,
Question
Cat off
Starter off
Rhs turbo off
Alternator/generator off.

If there is an easy way then great, should be cheaper! But the MD should do it as per Rave, and price it as such. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Coz if there is an easy way to do it without removing a whole heap of stuff mine will be coming off on the drive before i go to france!!

I have only not done it cos its appers to be a ramp job with lots of potential problems in other bits of the car if done wrong, im not mne to shirk away from a bit of spannering, but this looks tricky on paper. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Have done quite a few Laughing

All done from the front of the engine. Coolant needs drained, fan cowling and fan comes off. Belt comes off, a few coolant hoses need unbolted from the front of the engine.
2 bottom bolts on the alternator are a bit awkward to get to, and its a tight squeeze to get it out of the engine bay, only comes out and goes in 1 way, but easily do-able

I have done plenty of How-To's on the D3 + RRS forum. Maybe it's time I migrate over here for a while Whistle Thumbs Up

Just had a look and cant even see it, and ive left my tools at work, so further investigation will have to wait.

Is there any way to tell if failure is imminent, at the moment it is running quietly, and the hidden menu shows 14.5v when running, so looks like its charging ok. So hopefully should be ok for a fortnight.

Richtdv8 said when his went it was a gradual and noisy affair. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
