A slight hijack, but what is the recommended oil for a FFRR?

I checked in the handbook of our 2009 3.6 TDV8 which gave me a choice of 5W 30, 5W 40, 10W 30 and 10W 40.

Our Cayenne only listed 1 Oil: 0W 40. I used to buy Mobil 1 at Costco (much cheaper than even Halfords) and then drop it with the car when it was having an oil service- saved paying Porsche's ridiculous oil prices. As it used a litre per 1000 miles it was handy to have some to top up with.

I was in Costco at the weekend I thought I'd get some for the Range Rover- drew a bit of a blank!

I'm guessing Land Rover have a preferred oil manufacturer and grade?

Both the National and Opie oils online selectors recommend Castrol Magnatec 5w30. Not sure how sensitive these turbodiesils are to type of oil. I would have thought any 5w30 fully synthetic will do. I've got a load of VAG Quantum Longlife 3 from my S6 that I'll have no qualms in using in my next oil change.

I did my oil at the weekend and a genuine filter and shell helix HX7 (Which meets the ford spec of the TDV8) which cost me over £60 quid.

I re-used the drain plug as I didn't realise it was an o ring type but got oil everywhere as it comes out very fast and runs down the crossmember and goes all over the place! Embarassed

For £85 quid I would happily let Quick fit or National tyre do it!

I would take my own filter and drain plug though and absorbe the cost!

Sticking with this for a second I have just been on the opie oils web site and the Magnetec oil works out at £71.96 for my car and then there is the filter so for 85 quid its a no - brainer?

Providing they are using Magnetec oil for sure?

just got a quote and they want £72.50 inc vat for my car! Very Happy

Just rang my local depot and they want £72.50 inc vat and they confirmed that they will use Castrol Magnetec 5W - 30 and the guy even knew it takes 9.5 Litres so that gives me confidence. I asked if they change the sump plug and he said only if I paid extra and specified - but more than welcome to bring a genuine filter and sump plug he said.

Gotta be the way forward - I got oil everywhere! It was quite windy on saturday and because I had got the car up high it was blowing all over my drive.....

If you have a diesel with a DPF fitted use only the recommended oil e.g. the 2012 FFRR oil specification is WSS-M2C934-B which is a low SAPS oil.

This has nothing to do with the DPF needing a regen due to diesel soot blocking the filter, that is more to do with how and where your car is driven. The soot needs at least 350 degrees C to burn off so a half hour motorway run should clear the soot.

The DPF has a designed life of say 100,000 miles (depending on usage) and not using the correct oil ACEA C1 in this case the DPF will clog up with Sulphated Ash. This Sulphated Ash comes from any non-low SAPS oil being vapourised in the engine and is not removable by heating like the soot. The result is your DPF's life could be reduced by half depending on the amount of oil the engine uses.

Because this is a very slow strangulation of the DPF many garages and dealers either do not know or ignore Land Rovers recommended oil specs, as any damage will not show up for a few years.

As I say - Opie oils are selling Magnatec for £71.96 for 10 litres at the moment and I assume there's a delivery charge to go on that - so its a no Brainer.

This is one of the oils to get from Opie Oils, it has the correct specification for diesels with DPF's. The Castrol Magnatec appears to be for non DPF fitted engines.

Shell Helix Diesel Ultra AF-L 5W-30 - Applications
Suitable for Jaguar, Ford diesel and Mazda diesel engines requiring specification ACEA C1 or WSS-M2C 934-B.

Perhaps before you take the vehicle in for an oil change you should watch last weeks edition of "Don't get done get Dom" on BBC Iplayer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01s9...e_Trouble/ MY15.5 SDV8 4.4 A/B FFRR Mariana/Ivory

Just like any garage i guess Sad We have heard on here or the disco forum i think someone found out their filters hadn't actually been changed when the car had been serviced despite being charged for it....

TBH as I am such a nosey and fussy Censored i have stood and watched while mine have been done and checked it when i got home, mainly to make sure things aren't as tight as hell so that should i ever need to i can get them off, wheels nuts being the worst offending items.. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
