If sitting at lights or in traffic I knock mine into Neutral, it also helps because if you're sitting for a while you tend to do stuff, like check your phone/emails etc, and if you stop paying full and proper attention you might slip your foot off the brake and if you were in Drive, ...well, you know how that ends.

If I arrived at lights and they were red I would keep it in D, as they might change straight away. If I approach and they turn red I put it in N as I will be there just a bit longer. Previously..

I always go to N on stopping at lights. However , before getting used to this, I had the problem of occasionally rolling back, as I released the handbrake and gave gas to no avail I forgot I was in N and not D . (It is very hilly here. )luckily, the car behind always was well back.( probably saw my grey hair and wisely was not that close!)

Surely you re-engage drive before releasing handbrake? |

That's the problem. I thought I was in drive already, forgetting I was in N. now that it's a habit, I DO remember to put it in drive, before releasing the brake! ( you'll understand this when you get to my age , one day) Range Rover Vogue TD6 2002

I don't do it either it doesn't make sense putting strain where its not needed. As for warping disks I have warped 2 sets of front discs when I had my disco due to sitting with foot on brake. Living at the top of a mountain means long steep downhill which inevitably end in junctions. So after braking a lot I was too lazy to apply handbrake and the pads held the heat on the disks while the rest of it cooled. It took me doing it twice to learn ![]() ![]() |

Just watch you don't do what I did recently when I selected N at the traffic lights. Lights change to green, I subconsciously think I'm still in D and release the brake and press on the accelerator! result- revving the tits off the car and going nowhere, then having to hit the brake, select D and finally drive off! |

I try to put the car in neutral as often as possible when stationary. I'm no technical expert but it was how I was taught to drive - When stationary select neutral, apply handbrake.

Handbrake, Neutral . Then select Drive ,release handbrake and drive off.
