Rusty wheel arch

I need to tackle rust treating the rear inner wheel arch rims, the offside is worse than the near side.

After removing the rubber strip on the rear (bumper end) section I was pleasantly surprised to see zero rust, its a shame they didn't fit these strips to the other half nearest the doors.

The rust isn't that bad but my question is what's the best form of treatment? Sand down to metal and treat with what type of rust treatment? After this would anyone recommend red oxide and then top coat?

Also I'm thinking of removing the plastic wheel arch liners and completely cleaning and rustproofing any areas behind this. Has anyone removed this before and if so am I to expec rust or is the metal usually quite rust free?

I'm also needing to remove the plastic sill directly below the rear doors. This edges on to the wheel arch and mud builds up over time and blocks the hole. I had a poke and the quite easily cleared these with a wooden coffee stirrer but years of trapped dirt and water has caused bubbling through of rust through to the offside door shut at the bottom where the arch meets the sill if that makes sense. Is the plastic trim quite easy to remove?

As usual all advice...

Remove the arch liners and jet wash the whole lot with your garden hose not pressure washer.

Ten get the rubber strips intended for an SSRR as well.

Strip back with wire brush attachment then sand then use some rust eater stuff to make sure you got it all on BOTH sides, then zinc prime it, then paint, then top coat then after letting it cure for a day or two properly put the rubber SSRR strips on too cover them up and keep then safe for forever more Smile

God knows why they couldn't be bothered to fit the strips as standard but that's just land rover laziness... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I've treated the wheel arch with rust eater but what type of zincs primer can anyone recommend?

I have POR15 as a brand. Is this sufficient instead of a primer? 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

Any brand sold at Halfrauds etc will stop the rust coming back its the ingredients not the brand. I give them a quick rub down to remove the surface rust then treat/prime and paint. Job done it does not need fussing over its only surface rust in 9/10 cases.

I have a set of 2 (for the rear) SSRR arch protectors, that Ducky Dan supplied me with.
I didn't use them in the end as the FF went to the body shop instead and they applied stone guard under the new paintwork.
Think I paid £14 for them, still in the wrappers un-opened.
If you want them send me a tenner and I'll pay the postage?

Thanks guys PM sent to Dave.

it's the top coat that bothers me as the rust appears within the door shut and will have to be top coated.

As far as I know you can't obtain Zambezi in aerosols although correct me if I'm wrong... 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

These are the parts I have or very similar, there are lots of different sizes for FL2 / Sport etc. I just measured the exposed part of the lip on the rear arches and Dan sent me parts that are slightly longer than required so they could be trimmed to length for an exact fit. There isn't a part for the FF as they were never fitted apparently.

Sorry to hijack a post, but... Mine are doing this too. If the car is under a certain age, is this not something LR will sort out for free under their corrosion guarantee? RR Vogue TDV8 08

There's been mixed results attempting to get wheel arches covered under corrosion warranty.
There are a number of posts about it, try a search for 'corrosion' and you'll find the posts your looking for, inc the exact wording of the policy and people's results at different main dealers.
The corrosion warranty cover is 6 years.

Thanks to budgies help with the paint I have now treated and repainted rear wheel arches both sides. Very pleased with the end result and rather than fitting the rubber strips to cover them I think I'll leave them free so that I can keep the area clean. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

I have stone chips and very minor surface corrosion as a result on the exposed flange inside each rear wheel arch. I tried a warranty claim but LR declined stating that it isn't a defect but due to outside influence i.e. stone chips. Thinking on it further I'm inclined to agree but thought I'd try anyway.

I'm having this repaired as I type by the LR body shop and propose to waxoil and fit the rubber edge protectors to stop it happening again. Dan has identified and is supplying two off LR001623 stating these as my best bet as these are the longest of the edge protectors (cut to length) the RRS are much shorter but also more expensive. 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Baltic Blue MY11
