Mirrors fold in and back out

Hi

Car is a 2004 L322

Folding mirrors worked fine but all of a sudden if you hit the button the mirrors fold in- but then back out again.

Possibility that someone pulled/ pushed the mirrors out manually on the weekend. Not sure.

Should I crack open the casing and look for the control arm? Is that the likely culprit?

Advice appreciated

The mirrors have lost there "home" position and need to have them reset. Can't remember how that is done but you don't need to take them apart. Suggest to do a search on the forum. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Have noticed that the drivers side attempts to close further than it should- it hits the holder and then both mirrors fold back out

Does that help identify most appropriate fix to attempt?

Most likely culprit is the micro switch, so yes it’s an open the cover job in my view. The micro switch metal arm has either come loose or its just bent out of adjustment so it’s then a case of clipping it back or a bit of trial and error to get it bent back, needs very little adjustment to make it work. It only needs one micro switch to be out of adjustment or loose to affect both mirrors............

If you double tap the button a few times it can reset IIRC.

i'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly, but when mine did this its the microswitch that needs sorting. 2007 3.0L Diesel VW Touareg SE

Yep, As per Dolphinboy , tap the button on the drivers door that is used to fold the mirrors twice quite quickly (can't remember if need engine running or not, but don't think it matters) and it causes the mirrors to re-calibrate . I've used it 3 times now when my mirrors went out of sync - one folded in as the other opened out and vice versa - and clicking the button twice did the trick. I does seem a bit sensitive about how quick you push the button - so if nothing happens first time, just try again , several times if required. Saves removing the casing for what might be fixed by a few seconds of clicking. Steve

If the double tap on the switch to reset does not work, next step (as others have said too) is the microswitch in the mirror housing. Some dirt or a bug may have got in there. The Wiki has good pics and step by step directions on how to fix - it is really easy 5 min job even for non techies like me Smile : see http://www.fullfatrr.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=341 Mine kept re-opening recently but a clean of one of the microswitches sorted it. The switch didn't look obviously dirty either, but a quick squirt with an air duster seems to have sorted it and car is now back to as-new functioning. Norman

Worth noting though that if you fold/unfold the mirrors with that switch repeatedly (I think from memory it is something like 5 times within a minute), the mechanism will time out and not work for about 5 minutes, nothing broken or wrong but it just prevents over-use (I assume in case some gremlin starts the folding in/out). It will be OK again after a few mins. Norman

Hi

Just to update

Pulled off the drivers side mirror cover. Came off easily, just need to be gentle with it- prying the back cover away from front using a small screwdriver. Started at the bottom and worked my way around.

Found some spider webs, cleaned them up, then pulled out microswitch holder. The microswitch arm was detached, had snagged against the shaft. Straightened it up, reattached it and reassembled.

Working fine now

Thanks fellas
