fitting tow electrics ... remove battery Neg ??

Just fitting a mate's electrics for his new towbar - installation all good. Is it necessary to remove the neg pole on main battery before connecting in order to avoid damaging/upsetting the car electronics or is it simply plug in?

If there is a fault which could damage the car electronics wouldn't it show up when replacing the neg pole?

It did reset all the clocks etc. to 1200 as well as throw up a EAS fault (heart missed a few beats!!) but once engine started again it cleared everything and I re-set the clock so all's good.

THanks for your guidance everyone!
