That sounds like a seized water pump to me. I had similar on a Sierra about 20 years ago where it was the pump leaking and the radweld got into the water pump bearing.

yep i reckon the water pumps gone too as i don't think the fan is supposed to do this:

interestingly the belt is still in one piece, but changing it as were going in there anyway. I'll try and do a photofix, or at least instruct the wife to take photos as i go |

Thank guys, much appreciated. I'm waiting for a friend to source someone to do this for me as I fell at the first hurdle - the f&^%ck&*^%in viscous fan bolt. I've no tool to remove it and I've to wait and get a new pulley too. Couldn't have come at a much more inconvenient time |

The guy who helped me out No.1 was guy off here who lent me a tool to hold the pulley, which split on application, the second guy who came to help out and is a technician could not get the 32mm nut off with his usual shock off hammer on chisel so we took a blow torch to it eventually which did the trick. He didn't have anymore time so I ended up doing the replacement myself following the excellent procedure in the wiki on this site. Its not such a bad job, just a few things didn't pan out well for me.
