I've posted another question on the site regarding engine noise but it hasn't been answered. Based on my experience the only major drawback to the SDV8 is, however hard LR have tried to incubate the occupants, you still hear you are in a diesel engined motor until you reach higher gears. Motorway cruising is very quiet though. In my heart a SC would be perfect, but with stop/start drives to work every day I elected for the diesel. Overall I am happy.

+1. I've had two TDV8's and a 5.0L Supercharged. You don't have to floor it, just enjoy the smoothness of the Supercharged petrol engine, direct power delivery without turbo lag, and lots of overtaking power when needed.
Economy shouldn't be an issue when buying cars like these, especially when buying new.

Or perhaps the question should be "If you can get economy like that from the petrol engine why would you bother with the diesel?"

Let's be clear - that's 20mpg which is a lot when the diesels are pushing over 30.

I'm not anti-petrol, but I do like the diesels and some of the arguments like standing in diesel when you fuel up just aren't relevant to most of us these days.

Just looking at the mpg is how a lot of people get conned into buying diesel cars when a petrol can actually work out cheaper. You need to look at how much mileage you are doing as well because diesel is more expensive than petrol.

The difference in price petrol/diesel is currently less than 1% in the UK.

I can see how people are easily conned.

Not in the case of the RR but in a lot of mainstream cars like for like the diesel version costs more than the petrol to buy and often the diesel costs more to service. Factor in the cost of fuel as well and you have to be doing above average mileage to make the numbers add up.

In the case of the RR if you do average mileage it costs you less than £1000 per year more to run a petrol at 20mpg than a diesel at 30mpg. When my car is losing £20K a year in depreciation it makes little difference to the running costs of the car.

As far as I can see on the web diesel is 1.38 and petrol 95 is 1.33 in the uk, so if you would drive a 15000 miles a year the difference would not even be 1500 gbp a year. If price is an issue, why not drive on lpg? Looking at car prices the difference for a petrol car and a diesel car would largely pay for the fuel. I would never buy a diesel, the noice, the dreadfull smell...

If cost is a big issue don't buy a new range rover. Keep it for two years with average mileage and you can easily find it has cost you £50k plus all in. A bit extra on fuel seems immaterial when, if we are honest, the main reason for buying new is emotional not practical. Pressing the start button on my supercharged makes me smile and helps takes my mind off the cost of depreciation in a way that a diesel clatter never could.

If you want to let your head rule your heart then spend substantially less on a used car and, for many drivers, choose petrol.
