seriously though, i would check the oil level and ask if the correct type has been put in, and get a screwdriver and try and localise the sound.. ... - .- -.

The big ones you can fax about on here and bmw forums are vanos systems failing and timing chain guides failing. They area About the worst. Think a garage would charge round the £1800+ for doing the vanos and £1000+ for the guides. Someone on here did the guides themselves and it was a of a job. Their wrist case scenarios. an ex member had a similar issue and he replace the oil filter housing @ circa £70 and it fixed the isssue. the NRV in the housing had failed allowing the oil to drain from the top of the engine.
