Stereo Upgrade

So I'm really bored now with sub standard Sat Nav, Poor iPod interface, mono digi tv (after market etc and want to think about an upgrade.

I know it wont be straight forward in a Vogue with DSP etc but thinking of getting a midi unit for the glove box so I can keep all the on board computer stuff and perhaps fitting something like this..

Linky

Obviously a bit of work to wire up the speakers etc but may be worth it.

What do you guys think.? Ash

The unit in your link looks to be plug and play with the in-car setup (big cable that runs from front to back and plugs into the radio/BM54 connector). Only problems I can see is the lack of DVB TV as standard, no mention of how you enable DVB (separate box ?) and no IGO software for the SATNAV ?

But at last a unit that plugs into cars with the front screen (as opposed to replacing the MID unit), and looks like it does some of the car computer stuff too...

You go first..... Thumbs Up Very Happy .

the dvb-tv is normally an addition for which you pay for and the igo software is included and can be updated freely from the web.. ... - .- -.

probably means that it will slide into the recess but you will have to figure out how to secure it in so it doesnt slide out ..[does that make sense?] ... - .- -.

I can only assume that the head unit itself does not fit the standard solution for attaching to the gubbins behind the dash in the car. (bracketry)

EDIT - Stan - You type quicker than me.. Thumbs Up Ash

hmm - Interesting - I posted the seller this

Quote:
Hi - Can you tell me if this really is plug and play and that I do not have to remove any other units from the back of the car. Does this work with vehicles that have the dsp amplifier already. My RR is a 2004 model. Will it also give me computer controls to see and clear the mpg, mileage etc.If it is compatible, can you tell me how much the additional DVB-T tv will cost and is it all controlled from the head unit once fitted.

and their reply - very fast I might add...

Quote:

I have been looking and wanting something like this for some time now and this seems to do it all?

I would just be worried if it actually can just work and do everything it says it can by just plug and play. It would be good if we could see it working in an early FFRR. 2003 Range Rover HSE 3.0 TD6

I tried a similar unit in a lesser 4x4 (Toyota) a couple of years back. Whilst it worked, did what it said on the tin and was plug and play, the sound quality was poor and reliability not good. The sat nav would lock up, fail to load or not find any signal a couple of times a week. When one of the speaker outputs failed, the seller had no interest in any warranty when contacted.

Thanks Mick,

Agreed it is buyer beware - what might tempt me to do this as a trial is that I do not have to rip anything out to do so. If it works, great but if not at least I can just plug my old stuff back in and be up and running quite quickly.

I will see what wrranty they have and if possible buy it on credit card so at least i get protection (oo errrr) Ash

Ash,

I have been considering a iPad mini retro fit to replace the head unit. There are lots of videos on you tube of company's in America who do this, but I have yet to find a company in the UK who could/would...

I'm guessing it would have to be taken to a audio expert in a custom shop to be made up. The way the mount it to the front is with a custom man made Fibre Glass housing (which they sell). inside has the lightning connector so the iPad charges. What seams to be the norm is to recess the original head unit into the enclosure to keep all OEM control and features, and then place the iPad in front.

This would be a easy solution to my problems as it would have all of my music, a readily updated Tom Tom app, all the videos I could store on the device not to mention internet TV if I really wanted it.

Any thoughts? If your'e volunteering yourself to be a guinea pig lol Bushy

Well just call me Mr Guinnea... I've bitten the bullet and bought 1 unit to see what they are like. Aparently they do integrate completely and still use the DSP AMP and have the computer functions as well. (we'll see)

Got a good deal so included the DVB-T tuner upgrade and rear view camera.

Will let you know how I get on..!

If all works well I hope to be able to get a group buy if there is interest. Ash
