How much are folk paying for a service from independent ? Car last services God knows how long ago and is on 55k. Quoted £250 plus VAT ?

I would go and speak to Stratstone in Perth. I used Cupar. Never paid more than 300 for any service with a bit of haggling.
They also do a Stratstone value service I think they call it. They use equivalent parts but the price is way cheaper and you still get the book stamped, health check, valet etc. I did that for an inspection 1 and it was about 200. Previously..

Barebones oil service: if you buy oil, oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, fuel filter from Opie @ £116 and do all the work yourself. Doesn't cover cost of any other parts you may find need replacing. There is also the second oil filter "sponge" at the back of the engine, sponge only @ £8 full component @ £40 (can replace with vortex type).

[EDIT] Sorry I see you have V8 4.4 not TD6, but much of the above applies .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember
