possible fuel pump issue?

the car refused to start last week..
turned over but failed to engage.
the fuel was low..display said it had 50 miles left in tank .
jump statring would not work either.
put some diesel (5L) in and bingo the car started.
is this a sign that the pump is on its way out?
am i mistaken in understanding that there is more them one fuel pump?
car has done 75K mile
thanks 2011 4.4 TdV8 Nara Bronze

ALL L322 have an intank pump that has a mechanical mechanism that balances between the two halves of the tank. This motor or mechanism can fail and then when the level is to low the other pumps in the system just draw air up.

Normally it would occur when you get to about 1/4-1/3 of a tank but does depend on driving style as well as if you give it some around a left hand corner the fuel will slosh some over to the right saddle and be ok for a bit... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

PS the right saddle will fill up to about 70% full and then start to spill over to the left saddle before then filling the rest of the tank so the 5 litres would have given some juice to get it going again.
Also the fuel thats returned to the tank is dropped on from the top on both sides. I think this is also to help cool the fuel as well. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Same problem as me, in tank balancing pump. All I'll say is that the main dealers in my experience have been less than helpful, good luck. It's a bit of a pain to get to the inspection panels in the back to see. But once the rear seats are fully forward, with the carpet up. You'll see the two round inspection panels open them up, and as others have said you'll see fuel just in one side. Funny enough mine last went with 55 left in it. Bushy

Not in my experience no. It's part of the problem because most mechanics these days seem to be diagnostic fault finders only. So when no codes are present their stumped! Bushy
