Sounds like another classic SC problem, the brake calipers being stuck. Normally the rear calipers suffer this problem and most of us have had them changed. Sometimes it is accompanied by strange vibrations and "holding back". I initially feared a gearbox issue but then noticed the smell and hot rear disc.

I've had smoke pouring from my calipers before, plus a very bad shimmy through the steering wheel. At least your mpg will go up a wee bit once fixed |

Would you please be able to elaborate as to how the steering shimmy manifested itself (main dealer -1week ago - replaced Servotronic valve and was asked to/ said they did fully inspect/ callipers, discs & pads and only query they found was to clean front brakes. I have queried that steering did still feel something small amiss too)?

Violent shaking through the steering wheel, made the car undriveable . Never had a car react like that due to sticky caliper, Although never had such a heavy car either. Just go for a wee run as described above & touch your wheels when you pull over, it will be very obvious if any are stuck, as the wheel will be hot. |

There is no smoke nor violent vibration through steering. Took car for a reasonable drive and the smell is coming from front offside wheel. None of wheels were particularly hot. As mentioned, car was only given back by dealer a week ago and they had done some cleaning of front brakes after being asked to specifically check all car's callipers, discs and pads to reassure me they were not in need of near future replacement following other issues I had that called into question the effectiveness of selling main dealer's pre sale multi point inspection.

Just a thought, might it be the fuel burning heater kicking in? Can smell a bit when lit, and will still kick in on these cool mornings to help warm the engine. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
