Can anybody share any freelander 2 feedback?
Thinking of downsizing to reduce reliability issues and fuel costs. Had a couple of Mk 1 freelanders which was'nt a good experience!
Popped over to the Freelander 2 Forum but there seems to be a lot of camshaft/ clutch/fuel economy gloom over there! Mine was a blue one!

you'll only ever read gloom on an internet forum to be honest though.

i've not come across many camshaft problems or that many clutches compared to other models.

My parents have one. An '09 Td4e HSE. They love it and are going to buy another next year.

Nothing has gone wrong in almost 3 years of ownership. I think it gets 35mpg, but Dad's driving style is far from smooth.

I think the build and material quality is far removed from an FF. It feels terribly cheap by comparison, but it doesn't squeak or rattle and just gets on with whatever is asked of it.

Would I buy one? No. But I would recommend one.

I have a 13 plate "top of the range" at the moment as a loaner, looks good, drives awful. Still basic under all that bling and several motorway runs have given me 32mpg

Andy i've driven a few over a decent amount of miles though never owned them and they have always been in warranty TBH.

The ride is good, if you dont offroad and just want the 4x4 for grass and snow you should be fine, engine is strong and auto is good as well. Servicing like all diesels i recommend 1/2 the normal interval. Not sure if DPF's were fitted after a certain age or not but sure they can be deleted and removed discreetly to free the engine up.

XS or HSE are the ones to go for or an i6 If you can find one as they are nice as well  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I bought a new one in 2007, top of range HSE, think one of the first auto's. It's been brill! My wife uses it mainly but I drove it lots before I bought a FF. It needed a new gearbox at 90,000 miles, £5k - ouch! And by all reports I got 30k more than most do from the auto box. Nothing else much has broken though which is pretty good for any Land Rover! Yes, I'd buy another.

For what it's worth, my view is a definite no. I know that others love them; that's fine – it's not one for me.

Had an FL2 as a loan car from Marshalls in Cambridge for a week or so, whilst our D3 was being fixed. I hated every single feature of the rotten thing. Nasty nasty nasty. Slow, noisy, rough, harsh, awkward manual gearchange, small boot, very poor lumbar support, 27mpg (Which I thought incidentally was appalling), it had a stop start system that didn't work properly, and was large on the outside and small inside. Overall, a very poor effort; reminded me of a Marina.

If I have to downsize, I'd go for something entirely unlike a 4x4. Or even a very old and very cheap Range Rover. Graham

Recently had a new eD4 as a loan car - no point comparing it to a Range Rover proper, but it was an acceptable runabout.

On a recent off roading jaunt, the local JLR dealer sent along two Freelanders (OK, they were LR2s, but we know what they really are) to follow along with the ancient 110s most if the group use. I was very impressed with them off road. OK, they're not my LR of choice, but they're far from a street poser.

To be fair, and I've only driven it a few times, I thought it drove well. Plenty of torque and very car-like. Very easy to drive with a light clutch and a decent gear change feel. But not engaging in any way. No real depth of power but acceptable enough for those coming out of a 2wd family car.

I agree with the lack of boot space, although with the rear seats folded it'll swallow a decent amount of stuff.

I have had a 190bhp sd4 gs from hunters a couple of times as a courtesy car. It drove like a car, rather than a 4x4, make of that what you will.

There was plenty of power, it was pretty quiet, suspension rode the bumps and nasty tarmac around me well, granted it only had 25 miles on it when i picked it up. it has a reasonably high driving position and feels pretty solid imho. yes the dash is plasticky but its not a premium product, so thats to be expected. there is an exact one for sale at hunters at the moment and i was half thinking of getting it for swmbo to replace the skoda. £20800 for a nearly new with about 10k on it.

Its a fairly compact car really, shorter and about 200mm wider than the skoda. Though the boot was smaller.

Or you could get a santa-fe........ There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I think the earlier ones had the cam issues, and I'm pretty sure this may have been due to poor servicing with the incorrect engine oil. The one I had in the workshop broke at the fuel pump drive end but had a knock at cylinder 1. I should really do a tear down on it as some point.

They are infinitely better than the average D3 for reliability and running repair costs.

The later 2.2 engine is much better. Smoother and feels faster. Go for an auto though. The manuals, like all the later Land Rover manual boxed vehicles are just a pain.

Not as good as expected on fuel
Crashy ride - be careful on wheel size choice
Fussy dashboard
High loading boot sill
Useless boot size - that's the killer for me with two dogs to accomodate

It felt well screwed together, but I wouldn't have one.
