If they've removed the swirls they have cut and polished the paint.

As RRUK has already said, it sounds like they've removed the paint from the badges. Very easily done if you were to pass a power polisher over them!

Get them to supply and fit new badges FOC.

I fear you may both be right. I haven't had a chance to take a really good look at this yet, but the thought did occur!

I'll take a good look tonight and try to put a picture up. If it IS damage to the painted surfaces then I will be going back to them for a new grill and bonnet lettering. The best advice seems to be not to let a dealer near your car any more than is absolutely necessary!

I've posted an image of the damage in my gallery and would appreciate any views if you have time to take a look. It certainly appears to be some sort of mark/staining of the paint surface, but it could be that it's something that has actually attacked and eroded the paint and therefore it won't be something that can be simply cleaned off.

Have you tried WD40 on it surprising what that stuff can clean ...... to me it looks like stain runs from your bonnet ====================================

Demand your local dealership replace the grill immediatly (+ any other damage you believe they are responsible for) - cause a scene in the showroom if needs be...

Whilst I appreciate you may be more mild mannered than me elbitrevnoc - this will get you nowhere when dealing with the muppets responsible for doing this.

I know it is only a grill but it is your grill and they have damaged it - you won't be able to polish that out or improve it without replacing it for a new one - this should have been offered straight away as it has spoiled the look of your car. Why should you spend your time/effort/money correcting their damage.

You have spent thousands of your 'hard earned' on your pride and joy and for them to not fix this immediatly to your satisfaction is disgusting.

Just because your LR Dealer Principal might wear a snappy suit and tie does not make him any better than you.

I had a real face to face arguement with my local dealers DP (in the showroom) shortly after they delivered my latest RR - but what his team of staff did at the time was unforgivable and I made damn sure he knew it.

NOW he has provided me with his own personal/direct telephone numbers 'should I ever have any problem etc.' and I am offered the use of his car each time/every time- when in for servicing or repairs - not the usual demo's.

Whilst, deep down, he probably hates me (not that I give a toss) I have had nothing but the best attention from that dealership since.

Believe you me. I'm not taking this in my stride and they ARE going to sort this!

Already talking to the dealer principal - not yet convinced that he's doing much for me either, but haven't reached my deadline yet!!!

FWIW, that will come off. It looks like staining form a dirty mop head with a combination of G3 and dirty water.

You would be amazed at how shoddy the bodyshops actually are over this kind of thing and it's all too common to see a bucket of dirty water, a large tin of G3 and a really manky mop head. All of this adds up to a lousy job almost every time. Bear in mind also WHY bodyshops use G3 ..... Cheapness, that's why. A 5 litre tin costs less than 1 litre of top quality polish like Menzerna and the way these muppets throw it all over the car that soon adds up. G3 is (after T-Cut) the nastiest junk I've ever tried, and being a hobby detailer I've tried at least a dozen different polishes.

To be fair, these blokes are on a set time/price for each job so it's the system which is at fault, not necessarily the moron at the end of the mop, although the usual lack of active brain cells never helps either.

So, if you would rather do it yourself I would suggest a small bottle of Menzerna PO85RE, a microfibre cloth and plenty of elbow grease. Not easy I accept but the result is guaranteed whereas the result from another visit to the stealer will be more damage and thinner paint.

If you're interested I can post you out a sample sized bottle of the 85RE which will be plenty enough for what you need. Would be next week now - not going home before monday but you are welcome to this FOC.

A quick update. Firstly let me say that Dom is a scholar and a gent, who went out of his way to send me a sample bottle of Menzerna PO85RE and it's very much appreciated. Star man!

Sadly, either through user error or the damage being worse that I thought, I wasn't able to remove the marks. This despite my best efforts - plenty of time, lots of elbow grease, but no appreciable improvement. However, I'm relatively relaxed about it as I had already spoken with the Dealer Principal who has assured me that he would replace the damaged parts if I was unable to clean it up - we're sorting something out next week.

I'm slightly nervous about what else they might do to it, but I think the problem is now high enough on the DP's radar for him to make sure that nothing else goes wrong now! I'll update when sorted.

People fook up, some blatantly fook up, but either way they have a responsibility to put that right for you.

Nowt worth having a coronary over - especially a car  Java with Ivory 2006 4.2 Supercharged. 23.5k miles - NOW SOLD!

I just thought I'd let you all know the final conclusion of this sorry tale of incompetence. Car has now had both the grill and bonnet badges replaced with new - it seemed that the damage was etched into them and it couldn't be cleaned off.

That's the good news and the further good news is that I also got them to remove and re-spray all the door handle scuff plates. I had complained that there seemed to be some evidence of peeling paint around the edges of each of these and I suspect that it might have originally been disguised a bit with filler polish or similar. As a bonus they also replaced the telephone unit, as I couldn't transfer my phonebook via Bluetooth - it turns out that the software for this should have already been present, but it was the unit itself that was faulty.

Finally, the BAD News (there had to be some). the car was returned to me with only the most cursory of washes (if any) and the interior certainly hadn't been cleaned at all. Every one of the door cards, the central storage box and the rear luggage cover was smothered in oily finger prints (sound familiar RRUK???). I have let my feelings be known, but I've cleaned it up myself this morning - there's no way I want them going anywhere near it again. For everything they fix, there seems to be at least one thing they cock up! That's main dealer care for you!

Oh well - 4 months in and I finally have a car that I'm happy with!!!
