United Kingdom 2002 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Bonatti Grey
Engine Management Light + engine temp

Hello there everyone!

Newbie to this forum and to RR's also and looking for some of your expert advice.

Previously had a 2005 isuzu rodeo Dmax and decided to treat myself and upgrade to a RR vogue 4.4 v8. I have the 2002 (October 52 plate). I bought one that has just recently had 2012 front end conversion and it looks and drives like a dream. But after about 2 weeks I'm having a few issues.

The engine light has came in a few times now.

The aircon hadn't been reset when I picked it up so the dealer offered to pay me to have it done (I bought in Essex, I live in Glasgow). After having it some the light came on about 30miles later.
I had the codes read and reset, got about 20 miles and the light came back on.
Codes read and they were the same. All p0000

electric thermostat circuit fault
Lambada control adaption fault bank 1
Lambada control adaption fault bank 2

My local garage replaced a small 5mm rubber hose that was loose, and reset the codes. All was fine for a few days.
Got about 150 miles and now the light is back on.

I lifted the bonnet to check the hose and it is all still perfectly sealed but I have a sound of air coming from the coolant expansion tank (sounds a bit like air coming from the valve of a tyre). First time the garage checked it over there was sme coolant residue on the expansion bottle. Garage checked this out and thought it was maybe a little full, but definitkey had air in it, but was still circulating. Cleaned it all off and today it looked like there was a little coming from it again, pink in color.

Anyone any experience or advice hear before I get back to the local garage tomorrow. They are very good at what they do, and have been excellent with me especially as I'm technically still under 3 month warranty with a dealer 400 miles away.

That's problem 1. Problem 2 is more of a question ...

How long should it take for the 4.4V8 to reach correct temp. It takes me 2 mins in the morning. It never rises above half way on the guage, it gets there steadily but very very quickly. I'd say I cover. Just a mile of easy i town driving and it's at the middle of the guage.

Is this normal? Should I be heating up this fast, and/or could this be connected to my engine light problem.

I'd appreciate anyone's help and advice on this.

I should say I haven't noticed any difference in performance although I'd be inclined to say when the lights on the mpg isn't as good but its hard to tell being new to RRs and it being the 4.4.

Thanks in advance. Ross. 2002 / 52 Range Rover Vogue 4.4V8 with 2012 front end and rear light cluster conversion.

Welcome to the forum. Thumbs Up

One thing to look for on the expansion tank is small cracks. I've not had these on mine but have seen a few reports on here of this with the 4.4 V8.

With your second question, yes they do warm up that fast. Wink

Thanks.

The speed the engine was heating us was worrying me, but glad that's the way they are supposed to be.

Ill get a proper look at the tank in the light and run it past the garage tomorrow and see what they have to say. Ill be interested to see if all three fault
Codes appear again.

Oh, and in addition to the above I am now hearing a ...." Tat tat tat..." Or ..." tick tick tick..." As the engine ticks over. If I rev the engine it gets faster the higher the revs go. I definitely did not hear this when I bought the RR. But I'm obviously now listening more intently. I've read various posts now on timing belt tensioners, to oil changes, to "they all make that noise" . It had a service in January at 73K and it now has 76.5 k on the clock.

I'm now wondering if these are connected and pointing to a larger problem....??? Big Cry

Also when stationary, if I feather the accelerator to rev it very slightly the revs increase as expected very slightly then drop to to nothing and it stalls. Will they all dot his or does this mean their is a larger problem at work.
Now I've only noticed this tonight sitting in my driveway trying to have a listen for any tell tale signs.

Thought I'd throw everything down here to give the experts as much info as possible. And harmed with everything for my local garage.

Thanks again in advance for anyone who can throw some knowledge or advice at these issues. ( and for budgies prompt response earlier )

The ticking happens on mine as well, I'm not sure if it's the injectors or the ignition packs firing but I don't think it's anything to worry about.
It's not going to be the timing belt tensioners as the 4.4 V8 doesn't have a timing belt, it's a chain. Wink

As for the throttle response, definately not normal for the engine to cut out on light throttle movement. These are "fly-by-wire" throttles and do work a little different to the cable ones. I find it hard to keep a steady rev speed on light movement, the revs will go up & down 100 rpm or so, but it will always return to about 650 rpm when the throttle is released.

It could be an issue with the potentiometer in the peddle assembly, but I'm not sure. Wink

I can't help you with the other questions, but I too was surprised with the speed of the warm up. My mechanic said that was due to being an all Aluminium engine. In Canada, it's a very nice 'problem' to have. Mr. Green

The ticking sound. Does this come from the cam cover area and does it sound like the fan is hitting something?

If the answer is yes then its it probably is not the fan but it's probably the water pump pulley that is loose. They all tick a little especially the older girls, but if its loud then you might want to ask the garage to investigate as mine did. They lightened something and e ticking got much fainter.

I have the engine light on and off on mine and they diagnosed as a faulty oxygen sensor, replaced it and the light is now intermediate. Mines in the garage again this week so I will report any developments.

The ticking could be a number of things. If it's a light ticking its probably normal. Could be timing chain guides or the vanos system. quite often an oil change for a slightly heavier weight oil can cure it.
The V8 had a trick thermostat. It has the standard bi-matalic stat but also couples this with an electronic wax stat. The wax stat hearts up making the standard start open quicker. People on here have shorted this to keep the stat open to make them run cooler. When this is done the stat error is stored. Yours could have this mod done or the stat could be Censored not opening when needed resulting in heating up to quick.
The hissing from the expansion tank could be a cracked tank very common, a stuck prv in the cap, at worst over pressuring from a had gasket. Obviously the hgf is the worst case but the least likely.
I would think the stalling and the engine management light are linked. check the PCV system for Censored hoses very common. Try with the aircon off and see if that relives enough load to keep the engine running. check the induction system for air leaks. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Hi guys,

Thanks for this advice! Ill be getting the codes read at the garage later today and will be giving them a heads up in what you have said in the hope of saving the garage some time by looking for the known problems.

Ill post my progress later on today with any findings, results, or further questions. Confused

Many thanks again for the advice and keep it coming if anyone else has anything to add or an insight.

Thumbs Up

Hello everyone,

Just an update. Had the codes read today and they are all the same.

Garage suspected the end of a hose on to / or off of the man in take to the engine after the MAF sensor so they placed a cable tight tight around the end but I got a bout 6 miles and the light was back in again.

Possibly more or just as worrying was that is that the electric thermostat fault returns the moment the engine is started again even after being cleared. But it doesn't not bring on the engine management light??

The dealer / garage / conversion company I bought it from now want me to to take it back to Essex from Glasgow for them to have a look at it. In a 4.4 that's the guts of £300 in fuel + at least one night stop over.

My local have offered to take it in again tomorrow and do some hard looking for the fault to save this massive expense for me.

Did I mention before that all this seemed to be triggered after the aircon was regassed?

Anyway, still at square one. Crying or Very sad

What experience does your local garage have with rangys? Did they check any of the things mentioned here? how are you with using some simple spanners?

Hi rob,

Yesterday the garage ran some diagnostic tests to see if
And when the thermostat was opening and to see voltage of the lambda sensors.

The were hopeful of resealing the end of a pipe maybe the answer to the lambda codes.

They have an above average experience if RRs but are not a specialist. They do alot of 4 wheel drive and pickups etc and were always spot in with my isuzu. Gary at the garage seems to have worked in the engine quite a lot in bmws alot more so he seems clued up on exactly how everything operates, where it is and has been very patient explaining things to me.

I am fairly handy with a spanner. I've done little jobs on cars I've had in the past but I am a total novice to RRs and by no means have any mechanical experience. Just a hunger for knowledge on what i drive and the ability to follow institutions.
For example. I got step by step instructions to change the get valve in my isuzu and did it no bother. But there was a suggestion to me to clean out the throttle body of the range - but inwouldnt even know where to look
For that.

The RR is with the garage today, they have said they will get right in about it with all the info from here given to them verbally and written in a piece of paper and left on the passenger seat.
PVC hoses / water pump / thermostat
Mod between the two stats, timing chain guides, VANOS system ?

Failing the garage diagnosing I have a lengthy and costly round trip to Essex from Glasgow to see the dealer under their personal warranty. Which inwantnto avoid at all
Costs if possible.

The codes that they read all seem To have pc0000. Does this mean that only the dealer can see the actual codes fault?

I'm optimistic.............. Sad And also a little sad that in having these problems with my new OUTSTANDING vehicle.

Why I have never driven one before is a mystery!!!

I think I'd make the drive down and combine with short break in London just t make a point and as a matter of principle.

The car shouldn't be causing problems and after all why buy from a garage if the car goes wrong and you need to pay. They should sort it although I can see you point about the trip and cost in fuel. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze
