car shaking at slow speed when brakes applied or in reverse

3 weeks ago my td6 started shaking while moving slowly with brakes pressed either forward or if reversing at slow speed even without braking. If at full stop, the car doesn’t shake anymore, and when accelerating just a bit or moving without braking, there is no shake. The shakes are about 2 per second; I thought the gearbox is the problem, so I changed the oil and filter. Both were changed 5000km ago, without any problem till recently. The replaced oil was OK; there was no metal in it or on the magnet. The oil change didn’t help, so I went to the dealer who plugged the computer, charged 2 hours and told me there is no fault and he doesn't know what to blame. I then went to a BMW gearbox specialist that after a lot of driving said that he thinks it's not the gearbox or the converter, he rather blames an injector that doesn’t compensate well under load. He said proof of this is that even if the gearbox is in N and there is no shake, when the aircon compressor engages the shake can be felt just a little. Help!

Hi there,

I was suffering a similar fault at low speeds, then again at 50mph... after several trips to the dealer & tyre specialists, it turned out to be a nearside brake stuck on.. worth looking at 4.4 V8 Vogue Adriatic - Cream leather

The original ones, 19. The shake started to occur 3 weeks ago, so I don't think the wheels cause it... Also, I checked the brakes too...

No. Dealer said that being a 2006MY the recall doesn't apply to it...

We have a 2010 FFRR TDV8 Vogue Very Happy Very Happy .............. it is less than 4 months old Very Happy Very Happy ..................... it has 5,000 miles on the clock Sad Sad (can't put it down on Sundays) Cool Cool ................. the stealer fitted brand new front pads and discs last week Shocked Shocked

Vibration under braking at anything from 30mph upwards......... and not nice at 70 plus Censored

Described as uneven wear striation marks on disc assembly identified as a manufacturing defect. No charge Sir!

Not sure if defect "started" with discs or pads Yawn

Who knows. All tickety boo now Wink

Makes you wonder eh! Currently running FFRR MY10 TDV8 3.6L and a Disco 3 XS Commercial (tank like but very effective as a Company van). Plus one mint condition Track Day Car in the form of an E36 M3 3.2L Evolution circa June 1996 with lots of go faster bits and only 52k miles on the clock! Oh, plus a few bits to make it slow down really quickly as well! Luvverly.

Ok, looked under the car and then rechecked with the dealer, it seems that although my VIN is out of the affected range (3A101029 – 5A198054, mine being 6A20….), it has the old shaft anyway!
So he said it will be changed, but he says in no way this is related to the shaking!?

Among other interesting things (another) dealer said that injector no. 4 is not functioning properly so this could be the cause...

No way! What did you do? The injector repair cured it?

This is awesome! I mean compared to a gearbox/torque problem...

Right, the computer diagnosis at the main dealer showed: P0314 – cylinder balance control –l-component deviation outside limit. They said that injector no. 4 is at fault and they asked 1000EUR for a new one. I found a repair company and with the help of a local workshop I tried to remove the injector. This proved to be impossible, but while removing the inlet manifold, we saw that one of the round seals was missing.

The surprise came when we found the missing part in cylinder 4’s opening, all scorched and dirty. We assumed that when one of the injectors was replaced, the seal fell and nobody noticed.

We cleaned and refitted it and reassembled everything in order to go to the injector repair company and let them deal with the extraction. Surprise, the shudder wasn’t there anymore, and now, several days later, it still hasn’t reappeared. Was it the knocking when we tried to remove the injector that cured it, was it the removal of the seal that was obstructing the air intake, I don’t know… So I just left it like this for now…
