That is a bit more worrying but then again - he bought it and found he didn't like it as much as he thought he would, so decided to sell on? I have done that before. Again it boils down to asking the right questions, ideally BEFORE making the trip to see the car....

Also - and I had to keep telling myself this when I was looking for an L322 recently - remember you are looking at a car that is almost 10 years old and has 100K miles on it, and you are looking to pay maybe 15% of what it cost new. Be reasonable in your expectations!!

Yeah I appreciate its almost a ten year old car and you are getting alot for the money

Reason given for sale was that a family member had just passed test and couldnt get insured for it reasonably so would rather move it on than pay thousands for the insurance.

Don't believe that story about the driving test. You don't buy a Rangie and then suddenly sell on a whim.

Didn't they know the family member was going to pass their test?

I suppose when you see the car it speaks for itself as everyone seems to have some sort of story when selling so I usually do take them with a pinch of salt as I it doesnt really matter what story they are telling you as long as the paperwork and condition match up.

It does however raise alarm bells when the story seems unlikely

If you have alarm bells going off in your head then walk away... It's going into silly (cheap) season for FFRR sales as the suns now appearing...

Where is the car? I'm up in Dunblane and might be able to take a look at it with you. Having had my one now for a couple of months I think I have had at least 70% of the little hidden things appear that I was unaware of before getting the L322.

Where is it? There may be a local member who can give it a look at to see what's what before you drive to view. I would add these cars are amazing but things do go wrong with them. If you start your ownership with a thought in the back of your mind something isn't right or you aren't 100% happy it will only grow and turn your ownership into a mess. Find one your happy with and all questions have been answered to your satisfaction. Thanks for the offers guys but this particular car was in the north of england and have decided to pass on it for now. Apart from the question marks over history and short ownership it wasnt my first choice of colour so rather than making do I'll hold off a bit longer and wait for my ideal combo which is silver with a coloured interior as opposed to grey which most of them seem to be.

The one I missed on ebay would have been good and I spoke to the chap selling it whom seemed to be totally genuine but yet again he had only owned it for just over a month which got me dithering. It didnt matter anyway as he sold it the next day as I was waiting on more pics. Given that Iam narrowed down to colour Iam just hoping its isnt too long away.

Maybe it's just my observation, but I think silver is the least popular of the popular colours (if that makes sense)!

What I'm trying to say is, there are fewer silver cars than black and grey, so you might have to wait a bit longer to get your preferred combination of colour and interior. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Weil, I have been reading this thread for a wee while noo and here is my story.

I did what I know one should NOT do when buying a car, any car.

I was blinkered to wanting an RR.
Hit flea bay and found ONE local to me.
Garage, phoned him up and he offered to drive the 30 miles to let me view it.
In fact looking back, I think if he could have driven doon the phone then he would have.
An hour laters, and he was at the door.

Nice car.
(remember, I was blinkered)
Test drive and it all worked as it should.
Looked round and round it.
All seemed ok.
Very very limited service history.
No receipts just some stamps in a book.

He offered £500 discount ther and then.

Everything looked spot on but all, all too easy.
I said I would leave it.
He left.

I couldnt sleep that neet and I dont think I spoke to anyone.

The following morning the phone rang, yes, it was The salesman, owner of the wee garage.
Asking the usual.
When I said no made me mind up he knocked another £500 off.

Arranged to pop oot and see him next day with 'the war dept' as she will Want to see it etc.

Too late, I asked him how much for cash and he almost took my arm off.
Another £1000 off it.
And he would throw in the worthless warrantee and pay for the private reg transfer.

The car was mine.

the car has been awsome.

And the smile is still as BIG as the day I test drove it.

Anyways, touch wood it is ace to drive and we have done 30000+ miles in it and it has been 'worked' for sure.

I think you'll know when you find the right car.

I don't think it's a good idea to set yourself a date to find one as it doesn't work like that. Buying a car is ALWAYS a gamble, especially with older cars. I always rely on instinct.

When I bought mine the guy said he was selling the car as his business had taken a down turn and his wife was pregnant with twins. The car hadnt been serviced since just after he bought the car 18 months before and I scratched my head thinking he'd skimped on maintenance although the car looked mint and the book was stamped but there weren't any receipts.

After driving the car I told the guy what I'd pay for the car. He said no but phoned me later on. It needed new tyres, rear brake discs and the heated seat wasn't working, but the car was mine for what I wanted it for although there was a long wait of 3 weeks for him to change his private plate.

The most important thing when buying one is to think that many people don't collect garage bills when they own a car. If the book is stamped and it looks and drives right then talk about the price, think whether you can afford it, add £2k for contingency in case the gearbox or something else goes then make your decision. He also gave me the name of the LR specialist who had serviced the car and the guy told me what he'd done and what was recommended but hadn't been done.

I would never buy any car, let alone a Rangie from a second hand car dealer although I'm sure good cars can be had this way. I used to work in the motor trade and I know the tricks of the trade and the way cars can be tarted up. Mostly the warranties aren't worth the paper they're written on and even with many LR delaerships they don't want to know if you return with a problem. For these reasons I always buy cars privately. Meet the owner and judge for yourself whether you think they've looked after it and make an informed decision. In my case even though the service was overdue I believed his story about his reason for selling and I took the plunge knowing I'd need to spend some cash sorting a few things.

Set yourself a radius that you're prepared to travel up to. Say 50 miles or so unless it really does look mint in which case it will go quickly. I wouldn't be too regimented about things like a tow hook as this can easily be added afterwards. Set your standards, boundaries and budget and take a mate to look at it so that you have second opinion. Never make a decision on the spot. Even if you go and have a coffee somewhere. Walk away and think about it as this will allow you to digest the facts and it will also keep the buyer keen.

Within reason spend as much as you can afford, keep in mind resale value, but keep some money back for later as there will inevitably be a list of things to do and things you want to add.
