Be careful!!

Doesn't bear thinking about, splash all that money on a car and then find out it's been to the moon and back.....

Saw these two ads on ebay. Neither of the ads having anything to with me by the way, obviously an upset bidder. Scary thing is, I had it in my watch list............ Shocked

Rolling Eyes Well spotted - Scary to know what goes on out there! Shocked

The ad has already acheived 9 bids so far!

If the information provided by the whistleblower is correct - then all credit to him for pointing it out in the way he has.

Watched a program just last week that showed just how easy it was to alter the mileage on digital odometers using diagnostic equipment - far too easy for the dodgy car dealers that are out there.

It amazes me how many buyers spend thousands of their hard earned still without checking the HPI data beforehand.

I think the whislteblower may have won it last week then pulled out. I'd noticed that it had previously ended for about £28k but then was relisted. Perhaps this was the reason (funny he doesn't mention that).

I agree it is far to easy to clock cars these days. I was talking to a an insurance investigator last week who told me they have ways and means of checking such as the key and a coupe of other points on the car where the mileage is stored.

Seem to remember reading a statistic somehwere that 1 in 3 has had "correction".Shocking if it's true and no dealer prices are higher than everyone else.

There may be a clue in the fact that the original ad states "Previous owners - 0" ?? Surprised

Never ever EVER rely on mileages, even HPi checks cover themselves by stating mileage data is entered by 3rd parties therefore mistakes can(and often do occur).

Im a car dealer & believe me it is so easy for people to write down on the V5 say 323000 instead of 32300.Next time say in a year or two the HPi check is done again there is a discrepancy of probably over 200k!Alas it has NEVER done that, just someone mistakingly writing another zero etc etc.

Not all cars with mileage discrepancies are as per the above example but most are,yes most. The others are simply clocked for a fast buck.....prison can and should always be the answer!

Rules are there to be broken & in the second hand car game there are no rules that cannot be broken therefore they always are unfortunately.

DISCLAIMER........None of the above is anything I would ever or have ever done in 23 years trading! Bow down If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

Prison wouldn't happen in a million years. The real problem is that there are no actual consequences when dealers are caught and less than that for private sellers. What it should be is fraud, then maybe people would think twice.....

I must admit, the car in question states that there is full history and only 1 owner, so the mileage should be really easy to check. I still dont think i'll be taking the chance though.

Modern cars hide their mileage really well. I remember seeing a 5 series diesel a couple of years back at an auction. It was just 3 years old but had 264000 miles on it Shocked The only tell tale signs were a shiny steering wheel and the drivers window switch had worn back to white plastic. Fix those and you would never have known..... It sold for about 7k less than it's normal mileage couterpart. Not a bad profit for a successful clocker Exclamation

Well the knives are out! I'm still keeping an eye on this listing to see how it ends. The seller has posted an update below about the mileage. Claims it's a bitter buyer trying to stir things up. Who knows Confused
All pretty easy to check if bought I suppose??

Pasted from the listing:

PLEASE NOTE

It has been bought to my attention that a certain individual from Leeds, who came to view my car last Saturday 8th May, then tried to get me to allow him to drive away in it without cleared payment, has now placed a listing for my car on Ebay, claiming it has incorrect mileage!

Please be assured this is not the case and I WILL be taking legal action against this individual. The HPi National Mileage Register has also received (on 10th May), false information regarding the mileage reading for this car. This will also be corrected with the NMR & HPi and those responsible disclosed.

I have also been bombarded with Emails & text messages - ALL FROM THE LEEDS AREA! since this individual was unable to aquire my car and my solicitor will also be looking into this.

I have full documentation to prove absolutely that this is a 100% genuine car and the actual mileage since listing the advert is no longer 62+K, but is now just over 63,000miles, as I have used the car and the reading will change accordingly until sold. I have MOT and service records to confirm all.

Just to round off, the listing claims some rubbish about a dog kennel, please ignore these rantings as they are entirely false and laughable.

I totally believe the seller.A bitter "non buyer" trying to ruin his sale?? If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

I must say, when I bought my other car years ago, I did the hpi check, but also then contacted the main Dealer where it had been serviced to make sure the mileage and dates on the service sheets presented to me by the seller tied in with the dealers records. As I was not asking them to give me new information but just to confirm the mileage/dates, they happily obliged. HPI is good, but if they've accidentally been given the wrong information, then that's what you would get from them in good faith. Steve
