Amatuer Cracked Bumper Repair

When I brought my rangie a couple of weeks ago it had a cracked bumper above the tow bar where they had been backing into trailers, It has been annoying me as it ruins the look so I thought I would have a go at rerpairing it myself as I had nothing to lose but the cost of the paint.

I am chuffed with how it has come out (its not professional quality) but it will do me for a 1st go. I will post some pics of it back on the car soon.

Well done mate, I am sure I wouldn't do anywhere as nice a job as that !!

I "modified" a car years ago to cope with the sort of thing. Installed a bumper plate that protected the area around the tow hitch. Worked like a charm but wouldn't do in on an FFRR as it doesn't look nice IMHO. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

That's an awesome job for a DIYer. Did you use rattle cans or do you have a spray gun?

Thanks very much, I used rattle cans this time, but I have a dent in the lower tailgate so I may attempt using a spray gun to re-paint that if I am brave enough we shall see Very Happy

Can't you get one of these gizmos that makes the final hitch a lot easier without risk of damage ?? Or can't you put a heavy steel catcher directly on the tow hitch and not have to use a bumper plate ?

If you use a bumper plate you still need to transfer the forces to strong points otherwise the bumper may still get damaged. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Well when I say bumper protector, I mean a plate that bolts on to the tow bar thats what I have fitted, but it is quite short. Pics to follow

That should do the trick, together with reversing very gently of course Smile

Pity the rear view camera doesn't go down that far, like on the L405 (apparently) MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Just got a pic of it back on the rangie, as you can see the guard is a bit short, one good thing is it covers the scratches on the bottom plastic that cant be repaired as it is unpainted. I will just have to make sure i am more careful than the last owner.

Why would you wreck a bumper like that? Makes me wonder what else the previous owner didn't care about Whistle

Great job on the repair though chap Thumbs Up

Just use a stick or something like that, that gives you the correct height for hitching up so you know it is never above the plate. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
