Ticking noise from heater

Hi all,

Firstly, I'm a newbie so please be gentle! Neutral

Secondly, I have an 08 FFRR TDV8 and notice that when the heaters are on there is a ticking noise in the cabin.

From outside you can also hear it, coming from the passenger side near the rear door area.

When the fans are turned up to past half way OR turned off completely the noise disappears.

I know that this shouldn't be normal, but any clues on what this may be please?

Many thanks

Rod RR Vogue TDV8 08

Welcome.. Thumbs Up
It's probably the pump for your fuel burning heater. My FFRR does the same. Previously..

Hey! Thanks for such a quick reply!

Reading other posts I had wondered.... Is this something that I need mending or would you recommend it's ok to be left well alone? RR Vogue TDV8 08

I don't think there is anything wrong, it's just the noise it makes as it pumps.
When I first got mine I thought it was something to do with the compressor, but no. When the good weather comes and the FBH is not in use, the noise will stop. Previously..

Ditto, its the fbh pump, totally normal, will stop when thr weather is warmer and the fbh is not in use.

Just a note be sure to operate the fbh with the remote on some cooler mornings throughout the year (16deg c or less) to help stop it packing up completely come winter time. There seems to be a flood of problems with them when the weather gets cold as they have sat idle for 8 months. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have the same noise from the same area on my TD6...

And it's incredibly annoying at the moment as the radio is broken and the blower motor doesn't work so it's the only noise I have Big Cry

hello everybody,
I have the same problem in my RR tdv8 vogue (dec-2008).My official garage tell me that this sound(exactly your tic-tac) in standard/normal and it is produced by heat diesel system (in winter ) but my car does it from +12,+ 13 degrees (it isn´t cool!!!).I can´t believe that this annoying sound is normal
the sound begins one minute after turning on the car and it disappears after 15 minutes. If temperature is above +12 +13 the sound (tic tac)doesn´t hear.

Thank you for your answers and regards from Spain ( and sorry for my English)

From RAVE: Additional Heating
Additional heating reduces the heater warm-up time and is also used to maintain heater performance
throughout the drive cycle.
The ATC ECU activates the additional heating mode when the engine is running and the following conditions coexist:
l The ambient temperature is less than 5 °C (41 °F)
l The engine coolant temperature is less than 75 °C (167 °F)
l The heater coolant temperature is less than 75 °C (167 °F)
l The reference temperature is 100%
l The blower is on
To activate the additional heating mode, the ATC ECU energises the auxiliary coolant pump and sends K bus
messages to the FBH unit to start/continue operation (the changeover valve remains de-energised).
The ATC ECU stops the FBH and de-energises the auxiliary coolant pump when any of the following occur:
l The engine stops
l The ambient temperature increases to more than 15 °C (59 °F)
l The engine coolant temperature increases to more than 75 °C (167 °F)
l The heater coolant temperature increases to more than 75 °C (167 °F)
l The reference temperature decreases to less than 90%
l The blower is selected off

Sorry,i´ve a question.

does additional heating need an special burner engine in the engine area?or can it use any element related to the heating system into the car?

When you speak about FBH pumb;are you speaking about this special burner engine that have any RR installed?
I ask you this question because i think that my RR tdv8 (2008) has not this machine but it make this horrible tic-tac that I explained before.

I don ´t understan why I listen this noise when temperature is under +12º,+13º but when the temperature inside rises, the tic-tac stop. The noise aslso stops if I turn off the heating for the heating wheel.

thank you very much for your feedback

The fbh is a separate heater located under the battery tray/behind the front wing. it was fitted as standard on 08my tdv8 cars so your car should have it. It will operate in various conditions, these are in the wiki for reference, it should not have anything to do with you steering wheel element. But ticking coming from the rear door area is a separate fuel pump pumping diesel to the heater which it then burns to heat the water in the cooling system and into the cabin heater matrix.

Hope this helps. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes it pumps the diesel to the heater.

It is difficult to see the heater it is well hidden, best seen from underneath. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
