WTD: VW Golf Mk 5, Manual, up to £4000

As the title really.

I'm after a VW Golf Mk 5 (2004 onwards). Prefer a diesel, needs to be a low insurance group so no GTis or other lovely things please. Mileage not important but known condition, guaranteed history and known provenance vital, so I'm not looking for links to cars on Autotrader...

Thanks.

England 2003 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Bonatti Grey

Hi, my other cars a mk5 (slightly tweaked edition 30) and I'm a member of a good forum. This one http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,61119.0.html isn't too far off your budget and seems to have a lot of history. If I'm honest for 4k your going struggle to find something straight that's not been abused, or that won't cause you a headache and more money.

If the above isn't good have you considered a mint mk4 golf?

Hi SteveyD

Thanks, it's the wrong end if the performance spectrum, I need a base 1.4 petrol or base 1.9D. No mods. The Mk 4 was OK (I had a 1.9 SE TDi) but it looks ancient now, I don't want to go there

4K cars are about (there are >40 on AT in that range) so I know this is doable. Cheapest on AT is just over £3k:

In fact, if I knew that was a good car it would do me fine. Graham

bloody hell that's cheap as chips! check for the obvious things ie panel gaps, poor accident repairs, obvious engine & drive issues and you can't go far wrong. I've had my mk5 for 4 years and the only thing ever to fault was the boot handle and pcv valve.

Best of luck Thumbs Up

DSG is the future Smile (not that I'm biased owning a dsg golf and building a dsg race car)

Compared to the cost of a FFRR gearbox or torque converter they are a bargain haha. I'm cursing myself I know but I've done 4 years worth of UK track days, nurburgring trips and F1 circuits without any issue.

I love the DSG but this is for a new driver, has to be a manual. Graham

Hi KP, thanks but I'm wanting a car with provenance. If I go the trade route I'll pick somewhere very local to me. Graham
