I'm planning a return to a RR (have had 2 sports and 2 P38's in the past), but this time looking for a very useable Vogue, which will give reliable and (relatively) low cost motoring - I don't want to worry every time I set off on a 400 mile round trip, or worry to death about "the next service" and the dreaded call from the garage at around 10.30 in the morning to tell you how much needs doing. I am prepared to spend up to around £20/21k. So, am I better with a late (face lifted) TD6 or an early TDV8?? How important is mileage - do I need to be worried or be looking out for certain problems over, lets say 50/60,000 miles?? In general, what do I need to watch out for?? Thanks for any help and advice you can give.

You should get a tidy TDV8 for that sort of money ...  African Bush Junkie ... in London!

I debated the same question in November and had a similar budget. Ended up going with an 07 TDV8 with 58k miles for £25k from a LR Dealer. I suppose that I could have gotten cheaper if I was prepared to go with an independent or private sale but I wanted the 'LR Approved' stamp.

I get 450-500miles per tank and there is plenty of response when I step on the loud pedal. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

Depends on you really...do you like to just potter about at 50mph? Or do you like a bit of performance and possibly need to tow a trailer? If it's the former then the TD6 will be perfect if it's the latter and you can pick up a cared for TDV8 with motorway miles then that's the one to go for....Everyone has their own opinion but as your asking mine is TDV8 everytime

I bought a 1 owner 69k 07 Vogue SE for £23k last June

Independent, not a LR dealer so perhaps a little over the odds, but the car was immaculate inside and out. Every single thing on it worked....and still does!

12k miles later and the only money I've spent (other than routine service) was £65 to have a front lower arm replaced (or £800 at a dealer )

I went for a TDV8 because I wanted a facelift model and the extra power. I have not regretted that decision for a second

Some really great feedback, I suppose my heart wants to go for the TDV8, but wasn't sure if it had much higher running costs, accepting that the MPG is comparable.

It sounds as though a good history is really important - are there any "key" jobs that should be done at certain mileages? I'd want to look for these in any history file.

If you have the cash to burn I would get a 05/55 or early 06 TD6 if you dont need performance and the 10k you save can go in the bank.

As soon as you get it then get the gearbox flushed and the filter changed and do the diff oils and a full service and you should get that all done for about £6-800 easy so have £200 left for your first tank and a bit of fuel  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I just sold my 08 TDV8 for £21k. It did have 87k miles on it but it was spotless and very reliable. £21k ought to easily get you a slightly lower mileage 56/07 TDV8. I've sat in a TD6 and I have to say the TDV8 is a nice update inside. For me trying to spend £20k on a TD6 makes no sense. Either lower the budget a fair bit or get a TDV8 IMHO

BTW, I'm on the lookout for a nice 10 plate TDV8 and the general advice is to hang on a while as well as the prices are higher when the weathers chilly  Lloyd Barnes
