How to open the 'clamshell' to replace worn compressor.

Hi,

The compressor on my 02 l322 TD6 seems to be getting a little tired so I thought I'd try a new one (I have the RSW all comms and keep getting errors which indicate the compressor is on it's way out), however I cant seem to open the 'clamshell' to replace it.

Any help gratefully received.

Cheers

Unscrew it from the floor and turn it upside down. Thumbs Up

The bottom seems bonded to the top, maybe I'm just being a tool, I've just done the discs and pads all round and the front 2 airbags so I have a modicum of knowledge.

lol transpires I was being a tool, the foam insulation overflow made it look like someone had stuck them together!

Many thanks.

Mine was similar, had to prise the under cover off with a large screwdriver. .

Thanks, I've actually installed a new piston into the compressor to see if that helps before diving into a whole new unit, height change etc seems quicker.

I'll see if the dreaded error comes back....

That fitted? be interested to know how you have got on since. I ended up replacing my compressor rather than refurb. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

It did, it's installed and working but I haven't driven it long enough to know whether I'll get the error back (less than 10 miles).

The old one was very worn so it may do the trick, I suppose it depends on how worn the bore was.

I'll drive it a bit more and report back.

The error will come back soon, because only to change the piston ring is not enough, because the cylinderhead becomes bigger and bigger inside, the new ring will help for some month, it is like new brake pads on very old brake discs..., also you need to change the dryer patrone, or to dry it from inside like the one genial guy with his wiki-story!! Had buyd also this new piston ring, is good quality, but not strong enough for the old cylinderhead.

Have read this with interest,as i have noticed my compressor struggles sometimes, my Hawkeye tells me it is not producing enough air, so have just ordered the piston ring and hope it will sort me out .

However in the event of no change then URI i will be begging.lol

Cheers Piers

Well I've done another 30 or so miles and no fault yet, and like I say it raises and lowers a lot quicker.

I think for that sort of £ it's worth a go, even if it gives me another 6 mnths or so I'll be happy.

It's quite an easy fit but if you get stuck give me a shout.
