I am aware that, if I want to disconnect my MK3 Navigation system then I have to wait until the red light goes out. But can anyone tell me what actual damage is caused to the unit if I was to disconnect the battery BEFORE the red light goes out?

Afaik the computer is writing files back into the nav system. If it's interrupted, the files become corrupted and the nav system cannot reboot. That's how it was explained to me. I don't have any more technical details.

Its human nature isn't it:

"Here is a bucket of boiling water, don't put your hand in there as it will be very painful and scar you for life."

So what do we do ?  .

The reason for asking is I have been offered a faulty MK4 Nav system and the owner had disconnected the battery and removed the Nav before the red light went out. He says it powers up but the disc won't load.

I just wanted to know if the circuit board would be fried, because I need one for a water-damaged MK4 that I already have.  Cheers

Hmmm. Interesting.

I don't know about the internals, but I'm guessing it would depend on whether the memory was stored on the board on not.

I don't think a premature power off would short the board.

It sounds like a pretty impressive DIY job. Good luck.

Maybe worth checking in with Baris, he may have a way or resurrecting it ? .

Was a bit daunting initially, but it turned out to be fairly straightforward. I've already changed the laser but just need to replace the circuit board.  Cheers
