Leaking oil cooler ??

I just have another nice one with the FFRR. I parked the car for lunch and looked under the bonnet to see if my coolant level was OK. Well, it isn't really. There was a "volcano" of white sludge coming out of the expansion tank, the sludge you'd get in the oil filler cap when doing very short distance a lot.

The gearbox didn't feel "perfectly" fine so I am assuming that the gearbox oil is going into the coolant of the engine but since I don't know the exact make-up of the cooling system of a MY 2006 SC, I can't be sure.

I have no leakages whatsoever and haven't checked the engine oil level yet (but would be surprised it that shows anything.

I am back at work and will have a look tonight after everything has cooled down.

What do you think ??? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Shocked Hope it's not a head gasket. Sludge in water is not good. Previously..

Not a trace of white vapour from the exhausts, which is usually a good indicator. The volume of sludge produced is "impressive" Big Cry combined with the gearbox being a bit iffy, leads me to the transmission cooler. But don't know for sure.

Also, I drive quite relaxed and the engine here is always "pre-warmed" at 30+ ambient. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Checked the engine oil (dipstick only) clean as a whistle. Checked the gearbox and something looking like thin mudbrown mirky stuff flowed out. The smell is definitely not oil and it is waterthin. It is sitting in an plastic bottle to see if it separates or sediments sink out.

So for now my money is on the cooler and if that is the case I plan to do the following :

- New transmission oil cooler
- New radiator (not sure if I need because the leak is likely to be inside the oil cooler)
- New filter/oil pan
- New transmission oil, not sure how I can flush the old crap/mix out completely

Now the big one, do I spend both arms and legs to buy ZF Lifeguard knowing that I may have to do two fluid changes OR do I buy cheaper but still top spec ATF ?? What to do, thoughts anyone ???? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

What's wrong with a quick diesel flush to clear it out and then normal expensive zf stuff?! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I used to do that with the GM gearboxes on the GMC and Chevy. Not sure I want to do it with a ZF AND Nigerian diesel Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Planning to get the filter fluid kit from LRParts again (160 GBP), they sell the fluid at 15GBP per liter. Might have to do that although the Wiki says Shell ATFM 1375.4 or something, not Lifeguard. What to do. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

If the LR stuff is cheaper and done well so far go for it. If not then go with what zf is right for your box and country as the heat load where you are will affect it slightly and the normal engine oil Wink FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Waiting for oil cooler and filter/pan now.

Still looking for a cheaper ATF to flush the box with to get the ATF/Coolant milkshake out Sad Now I really wish I lived in Europe or another place where getting ATF is not such a nightmare. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hey KP, I can get diesel here and filter it quite easily. You're right it doesn't make a lot of difference considering the crap that is in the gearbox now. However if I can get a cheap but good ATF, it should be better than diesel. There seems to be quite some good alternatives on the market (although no officially "approved" by ZF/LR) so we should be able to get something considering the type of cars that are found here in Lagos !! Mind you, those people don't care about the cost too much either. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Have you tried sending RRphil a PM and ask him what you cold use? He's the best around on all things gearbox. I would be more concerned with the water content rather than ATF contamination. Water is the biggest killer of oil and its lubrication properties. Our rotating equipment engineer mentionsed something along the lines of 5ml (tea spoon full) of water reduces oil lubrication propertie and lifes by something stupid like 1000x. I'm sure any ATF would be better than having water in there. You can get disposable testing kits for oils to let you know about contamination. Might be worth using to make sure you have all the water out???

Thanks for the tip Rob. Actually I PM'ed RRPhil today with some specific questions. I will post some pics of the current transmission contents and it is HORRIBLE to look at. It has a green tinge to it but looks like water with very fine mud in it.

The worst is that it is not separating so the emulsifiers in the oil are working extremely well (I have a clear bottle with some of it sitting in my cupboard waiting for something to happen but nope).

As I still have the 3-4 shift problem and my feeling is, that it is controls related, I am planning to remove the mechatronic unit when I replace the filter (after flushing the crap out). It seems that (from a Sonnax document I found online) that the 3-4 shift can be caused by the Delay Accumulator Piston.

I also plan to do the ECU reflash.

Worst case is though that the gearbox is done and I need a refurbished one. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
