Hope it's not a head gasket. Sludge in water is not good. Previously..

Not a trace of white vapour from the exhausts, which is usually a good indicator. The volume of sludge produced is "impressive" combined with the gearbox being a bit iffy, leads me to the transmission cooler. But don't know for sure.

Checked the engine oil (dipstick only) clean as a whistle. Checked the gearbox and something looking like thin mudbrown mirky stuff flowed out. The smell is definitely not oil and it is waterthin. It is sitting in an plastic bottle to see if it separates or sediments sink out.

I used to do that with the GM gearboxes on the GMC and Chevy. Not sure I want to do it with a ZF AND Nigerian diesel MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Planning to get the filter fluid kit from LRParts again (160 GBP), they sell the fluid at 15GBP per liter. Might have to do that although the Wiki says Shell ATFM 1375.4 or something, not Lifeguard. What to do. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

If the LR stuff is cheaper and done well so far go for it. If not then go with what zf is right for your box and country as the heat load where you are will affect it slightly and the normal engine oil FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hey KP, I can get diesel here and filter it quite easily. You're right it doesn't make a lot of difference considering the crap that is in the gearbox now. However if I can get a cheap but good ATF, it should be better than diesel. There seems to be quite some good alternatives on the market (although no officially "approved" by ZF/LR) so we should be able to get something considering the type of cars that are found here in Lagos !! Mind you, those people don't care about the cost too much either. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Have you tried sending RRphil a PM and ask him what you cold use? He's the best around on all things gearbox. I would be more concerned with the water content rather than ATF contamination. Water is the biggest killer of oil and its lubrication properties. Our rotating equipment engineer mentionsed something along the lines of 5ml (tea spoon full) of water reduces oil lubrication propertie and lifes by something stupid like 1000x. I'm sure any ATF would be better than having water in there. You can get disposable testing kits for oils to let you know about contamination. Might be worth using to make sure you have all the water out???

Thanks for the tip Rob. Actually I PM'ed RRPhil today with some specific questions. I will post some pics of the current transmission contents and it is HORRIBLE to look at. It has a green tinge to it but looks like water with very fine mud in it.
