Starting Issue (Dies After Firing)

Occasionally getting this issue, normally after 1-2 days of not being used

Cranking engine fires pretty quickly but doesn't do the normal 1000ish rpm burst, it splutters and dies within 1-2 seconds

Normally this happens twice and the third time it will fire up and be fine, once running the engine is fine and runs perfectly smooth, suggests to me filter and pump are fine.

Gut instinct is there is fuel starvation.

Any ideas?

Happened to me today for the first time but mrs says it has happened to her too - Usually when I get in I put key in, turn to pos 2 and put seatbelt on before I crank - today I didn't ..... Wondering if I didn't give enough time to prime.

Same with mine before I replaced the fuel pump unit in the tank and had the injectors cleaned and the inlet manifold. Is was super smooth running after that and starts on the turn of the key (unless it has been sitting in the sun for a while in the plus 30 temps here, then it takes a second or two to fire).

Now I am not suggesting to replace the fuel pumps (very expensive although I was lucky that Kingpleb found a cheap set on Ebay for me Smile )but I would suggest to :
- Replace the intank filter (the filter is not that expensive, I paid something like 60 Euro at the Dutch dealer, but it is a bit of work).
- Run injector cleaner for a while as well as very clean fuel (V-power and the likes).

If that doesn't help, do a full clean of the inlet manifold (quite a job though but you could do it yourself) as they get horribly dirty inside (partly because the surface is rough as guts, I think if you would polish it, it would make the world of difference in power delivery but that is beside the point) and next step, get the injectors removed and cleaned.

I tried the same trick as you, let it prime for a while but that doesn't seem to work at all. With the new set-up it actually works against. If I just turn the key straight to start it will fire immediately, if I leave it on prime for a bit, it takes a bit longer to fire sometimes. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Mine did this recently, new MAF fixed it instantly.

Ensure you get genuine Bosch, cheaper OEM was a waste of money for me. L322 4.4 Vogue MY03 - Her name is Bulletproof .... you already know she's not Smile

The MAF is not that cheap, just clean it first and see if there is an improvement. Use cleaning alcohol and a cotton bud, be careful not to damage anything.

Also run injector cleaner and "clean" fuel for a bit (V-power), it can sometimes help. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
