We were on the M1 on Saturday trying to get to a friend's 40th, a little late, I had the hammer down .

Now and then I needed to brake and bring my speed back to legal levels The brakes made an odd noise, like a groaning noise, there was no vibration, just noise.

I've also noticed they do it when coming to a halt and I've been travelling at a decent speed (about 50-70mph).

I was trying to figure out why they'd make the noise? Any ideas? Discovery 4 HSE

Wouldn't want to state the obvious to you RRUK (we know you know your stuff!) but in an attempt to answer your question I would suggest the following - if this has just started to happen then the friction area of brakes has changed because of general wear etc . . .

It could be a build up of brake dust in and around the components (dare I suggest your pride and joy has some grime on it somewhere )

or

When you wash it - do the discs turn a pale shade of orange - this usually happens when I jet wash mine and is removed as soon as its driven, after braking a few times - but this could contaminate the pads for a short period of time. (I havent spent 11hours cleaning a car and usually make a point of driving mine as soon as possible after washing it - to prevent the orange disc situation, and to blow out the trapped water before drying with a chamois) I would assume the longer the discs are left to react with the water, the rusty appearance becomes worse or builds up and may have more of an effect on the brakes.

because of possible use of alloy wheel cleaners, tyre shine etc. again the surface areas of your discs maybe glazed or the area which should be coppergreased on the rear of each pad has been broken down and might dissolved away and would need attention.

Brake discs can also become glazed after driving the car mile after mile at regular or constant speeds and applying brakes at same pressure all the time- (think of an 'old dear' in her runabout driving back and forth from church) However - I wouldn't dare put you in this category of driver

Personally, I would initially find a quiet stretch of road and get your car up to reasonable speed 30-40mph, then brake firmly (without triggering ABS) till the car stops - do this a few times - if this makes the groaning noise stop or change then you can be pretty sure they were, or are dirty in one way or another.

Of course if it don't - then they are or probably on their way out

I NEVER profess to know everything about the Range Rover, I know some stuff but I am no mechanic.

It has been a gradual increase in the noise, there is one particular junction I regularly cross and it always makes the noise there, its certainly getting worse. I would say the discs and pads might need changing, I have no idea if or when they might have been done. there's no brake light warning light come on though.

The car was last serviced about 8000 miles ago, who knows if they checked then, if they did it was just before the sale so maybe they thought 'sod it' and left them for me to replace?

The discs do go orange after a wash but this has not yet affected them. The pedal feels firm and at lower speeds the brakes seem fine.

The disc are very shiny and I would imagine on their way out. Time to think about calling round for quotes.

Being a TDV8 with Brembos should hike the price up nicely!  Discovery 4 HSE

Sounds to me as if the Pads are shot ..........

Ref - VMPP The discs usually go orange because of water on cold exposed metal - doesn't happen in rain or whilst driving because discs are hot enough to evaporate water immediatley and/or will be removed once pads and discs have done full rotation when braking to stop.

Ref - RRUK The stealers tried and tested method for checking brakes at time of inspection is to rub their greasy stubby fingers along the outside of brake discs - if it was their responsibility to replace the brakes before delivery then its unlikely they did so, allowing you the honour of paying for them to be done - even if they were only on their last hundred miles of life - I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE!

Brake pad sensors are only usually fitted to one side only and do not monitor each and every corner.

If you want to contribute to the Land Rover dealerships running costs then front Brembos and discs fitted will probably set you back approx. £500 - the same deal on the rears approx £300.

OR

You could source OEM pads and discs on eBay and get them fitted at a local independant garage for half the price

I got my Front and Rear Pads and Disc's replaced at my local Dealership along with the sensor assy, wiring assy, and brake lining kit for £464.44p which included Discount

And it's Brembos i have so don't think that was too bad .......

I'd never pay over the odds for a dealer to do the work, much prefer sourcing parts myself and then getting an indie to fit. Discovery 4 HSE

MICK - Was that a Land Rover Dealership? I cannot believe there is that much difference between them. I paid £650 for new brakes all round on my old TD6 a couple of years ago which is why I guesstimated approx £800 for the Range Rovers with Brembos - And why I have since replaced my brakes myself

I have had this or something simillar twice on the rear i had picked up a small stone both times and same wheel,being the rear drivers side also i have notice at low speed how many stones are trown up onto mt side tubes so i think this is how it may have happened !could it have been debris through front disc cooling scoops ??

Went for a quick spin this evening and floored it down a nice straight empty country lane then did a max power emergency stop using the foot pedal, hoping it might have helped but guessing it will be the same! Discovery 4 HSE

I had the groaning brake noise in hot weather all last summer and frustrated me to hell, I could not come to a smooth stop without the noise occuring. All my series Land Rovers have quieter brakes! The Defender's are whisper quiet too.

The brake pads, but not the disks were replaced when I got the car at 31k, it has now done 45k, I am just waiting for hot weather (25 C+) to see if they do it now. I hope not because they should have bedded in 14k!

The car went back twice for Hunters Guildford to fix last year, as with all the other difficult to pin-point issues they just shrug their shoulders and give up - what a shower.

Guava (who now have my maintenance contract) suggested all the sage advice above for tracing the issue as well as a full strip down and clean and potentially skimming the discs to remove any score marks.

I am not looking to the change disk and pad scenario - that will encourage me to look for secondhand 2010 model. 2018 Range Rover Autobiography

I am wondering if RRUK could update on how this was resolved in the end. I took my TDV8 down the autobahn last week and had a fast run. I had to break hard a few times from 120+ mph and the car started developping a noise and vibration from the front wheels when braking. It is not permanent and seems to be happening when the discs get warm. It is, needless to say, quite disconcerting. Any help before I pay for a new set of everything will be greatly appreciated!!!

There are Piles of reasons that you can get a noise and vibration from the brakes.

I'm assuming that you have the 4.4, and so the 6 pots brembos. The discs shouldn't give any noise or vibration no matter what speed you brake from. The front calipers are pretty robust and shouldn't give much problem.

Do you have original LR parts on the car?
How old are the discs and pads?

Have you checked to see if you have a binding caliper front or rear, check for excess heat from the disc. One will be much hotter than the others if it's binding!

Check your cv boots and gaiters round the ball joints. They can deposit grease onto the braking surfaces and contaminate the discs if split.

If you have put too much heat into a disc it can warp, it does happen, I had a set of non Lr discs on the disco which warped after 5000 miles.

Check the track rod ends and power steering arm ball joints for excess play.

As I say there are numerous things which can cause a wobble, it's a matter of starting with the cheapest first..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
