I think the outer look is OK (at the moment I prefer the old) BUT I know it will continue to grow on me and eventually the L322 will look out of date, but the inside is just, well.....a lower grade of the old & that won't ever grow on me Big Cry .

Ignoring the fact that the L405 is clearly more modern (that's really fashion with a bit of technology thrown in, not design), I'm not sure how anyone could think it is a better design.

The proportions of the L322 are pretty much spot-on, and there isn't really an unnecessary line on it. Contrast with the the L405 - almost-Q7 proportions and lots of fussy look-at-me detailing - lights, bumpers, grille, gypsy stripe, wheels, door and bonnet "vents".

It shows how good the last one was.

land rover lost the plot this time IMO: It isn't hard to design a handsome, beefy range rover, all you need is some set squares, and remember to add some castellated bonnet edges, a floating roof and a high seating position.

The truth of the matter is that RR fans don't really give a s Censored t about the performance and, to a certain extent, fuel economy, if we did then we'd all be in German econoboxes. If it can go off road, has a plush yet airy cabin, makes you feel good and has that high seating position, we'll buy it. Land Rover went down the wrong path chasing rivals and got stuck there. Hence the design is compromised, as the new aerodynamic features make the car look wrong. Apparently they realised this too late, and tried to solve the matter with naff design fripperies such as the side strips and flicky lights. Interior button rationalisation was initially a great idea, but actually the Touch Screen is nowhere near intuitive enough to warrant this: I can see owners going crazy going through submenus for simple features. The smooth nose and lowered castellated edges also mean that you can't sense the corners of the car as you could in an L322, a factor which made the L322 feel smaller than its size when manoeuvring. Park assist or not, its a pig to park. All of this coupled with a new prohibitive pricelist signifies the death knell of the traditional Range Rover...

Wow I can get carried away with lambasting L405s haha

my 5 cent are - that the L405 looks a bit like a Touareg (outer look) but perhaps it will grow on me too - the L322 looks more massive and as you know we germans love tanks Cool All my spelling errorz are belong to me!

Fuel economy is a big issue - hence the popularity of the pre-TDV8 diesels, despite them being awful - and with the focus on CO2 test figures it's only going to become more of one.

It's a bigger problem for Land Rover because all they make is off-roaders, which is why some of them are now 2WD pretend ones (hence rumours of a 4-cylinder, 2WD Range Rover which isn't an Evoque).

Sloping front is presumably necessary as much for NCAP pedestrian score as for aerodynamics.

trommel, yeah but the L322 still met pedestrian guidelines for a while yet... remember these guys can still make the defender! Point taken about economy, but the L405 has been a huge dissappointment from this perspective: despite the radical overhaul no Range Rover tops 40mpg, which should be the benchmark for a big diesel car in 2013. And anyway, the significant cost of purchase means that economy isn't as important as it once was: its only the used market that really cares I sps

The Defender is just enjoying a stay of execution though.

Agreed that the difference between 25 and 35 mpg is a minor cost when you consider depreciation etc. but remember what the real driver is - EU-mandated 95g/km average across a manufacturer's products by 2020 or pay €95 per excess gramme of CO2 per car.
