Tiny spots of rust everywhere!

I gave the rangey a quick jet was yesterday to get rid of all the road salt etc and on close inspection noticed tiny little orange spots of rust everywhere, after panicking like a nutter I noticed they weren't just on the metal body parts but in the plastic parts aswell :s anyway a quick look on the Internet put my mind at ease as I figured it was just s all metal particles from brake dust etc in the atmosphere that had stuck in the top layer of paint and gone rusty, so after an early finish today I thought I would give 1 panel a quick rub with some autoglym polish, it took some serious effort but they started to come off, after 3 hours I had polished the full car! Range Rovers just have this knack of attention seeking don't they. I didn't get any before pictures but here's a couple afterwards, I'm really chuffed with how well the paint has come up:)

I didn't bother cleaning anything else and there is still so much I need to do to get the exterior how I want it including, colour coding the handles, doing something with the faded mirrors (poss cc them) change all exterior weather strips as they have bubbled a little, fit some mudflaps and get it booked in for the rear arches to be done as there are a few bubbles on the underside (had a quote, not the cheapest but I want it perfect) iv also got some 20" 7 spoke alloy wheels arriving on Wednesday, I have one rear facelift light and on the lookout for the 2006- front end, I could of sold this car 10 times over but I'm growing to love it more everyday :)

Had the exact same spots on my silver Disco3 seems to be more obvious on silver. Clay bar works a treat.

Well my plan was just to do a bit to see if it would come off and the book it in with a detailer as I thought a clay bar would of been the best bet but its good enough for now, are clay bars difficult to use, is it easy to damage the paintwork?

Try clay bar next time, it's perfect for getting contaminants off the paintwork.

Once you use sufficient lubricant you will be fine. Some quick detailing spray would be best but i have seen water mixed with a small bit of washing up liquid and used through a spray gun. I used clay bar on mine to remove the spots and it works. The only thing is you will need to wash and polish car afterwards as this will remove wax etc from paint. Also with the autoglym being a polish it doesnt offer any real term protection so if after polishing best results are acheived by applying one or two layers of wax to ensure protection etc. Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

As above, googs only said it once, for once Wink

but a claybar is the best thing for this and tar Smile

Mines done every few months at the minute and i just use water with mine to act as lubricant as the bar said it was possible and it wasn't wrong. Another option is the car shampoo itself Smile easy to rinse off then and an extra mini wash for the panels Smile

The sides seem to suffer the worst with the spots and the boot lids, god does the airstream dump Censored on them Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yes I found the rear doors and bootlid had suffered the worst, I think a clay bar would of been the best bet but a microfibres cloth and some autoglym has got rid of 95% of it

Good wax that I use and highly rated and cheap would be "colinite 476S" there are many types but this gets rave reviews. Just make sure you use only on one panel at a time as can be difficult to remove if left on too long. They do a liquid version 2 which can be easier to work with.

I had a very similar problems many years ago.
I was an apprentice at the time and we were working next to HP sauce factory in Birmingham.
I didn't use my car from week to week as we were lodging and working seven days.

I went to my car and it looked like a rust bucket. There was tiny little spots everywhere. i asked around what it could be and it turned out to be acid that they use in the production process. it was being expelled via a chimney not far from where i was parked.

I gave it a good clean and polish and it all disappeared.

I have seen it lots of times since cement dust, iron fillings, grinding dust. they are all bad for our paintwork.
