Wales 2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Zambezi Silver
What to buy ...

Well, here I am. Previously been a Range rover owner (4.0 P38, then an early TD6 vogue), and, after a bit of time away, I'm contemplating returning.
I'm going to be looking at spending up to £15k, or thereabouts, and I appreciate that this gives me a few options.

1. TDV8, high mileage. I'm just about in the price for one of the first ones of these, if it's got big miles on it
2. TD6, late one. Reasonable/low(ish) miles.
3. TD6, cheap one.

I'm not even going to consider a petrol, as I do a fair bit of mileage. Been there with my old P38, so they are out of the running. I'm not really that interested in performance, but in comfort.

I've had a good look through the forums, so hopefully I'm not asking too many dumb questions, but ...

TDV8 : how reliable is the engine and gearbox, in the long term. Bear in mind that I'm going to be buying one of those with 100k+ on the clock, if I do.
From what I understand, the economy for the TD6 and the TDV8 are pretty much the same, close to 25 mpg. Would I be correct ?

Would I be better getting a late TD6 (05/55 ish), where a lot of the early model problems have been ironed out ?
Or would I be just as well getting a 2003-04 car, and putting the rest of the money away to pay for any work that needs doing ?

If it was my money I'd go for TDV8 they are pretty much bullet proof according to what I hear and read and the older TD6 have soft gearboxes. I'd go for TDV8 with full documented service if it was me. Also a far better car to drive any distance. Thumbs Up

[Stan you made it look like I was recommending the TD6 by deleting my partial quote mate. I was pointing out it was TD6 not TDV6!!!!]

TDV8 for me.... (edited)

PS: Sometimes the use of partial quotes makes sense even if its the next post.... (Jeez some signatures take up more space Laughing )

I'm not talking RRS, but FFRR. As far as I know, there was never a TDV6 in the FF

Its up to you.

What ever you buy look at the service history and make sure it has one.
The MPG on either is dependant on the way you drive and really where you live. If you live as i do on the side of a mountain (not that big though)you won't get 25MPG. You will if its all motorway driving.

I have the TDV8 and i love it the power is 272BHP i think the TD6 is 174 ish.

Gear box problems with the TD6 buy one with that sorted.
Service history with the V8 is a must.

Hope this helps a little.

I would have the TDV8 though any day of the week. 2020 Porsche Panamera Turbo Hybrid (V FAST)

Td6 chipped to 230 is my suggestion - more reliable engine, but not as modern. Just get a nice cheap one and save money for gearbox 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

There's no right answer.

As the owner of a TD6 I've got to say they're looking a little prehistoric. They are noisy and slow and the 5sp gearbox is a weakness and is missing a cog.

Having said that, if you're doing a fair number of miles do you really want to get a TDV8 which already has a fair number of miles on it?

If I was you I'd maybe try and stretch my budget a little higher and get a better TDV8.

I'm happy with my car, but if I was buying now I'd get the TDV8, but when I bought my TD6 the TDV8 was more than I could justify. Nearly 3 years later they're way cheaper.

my TD6 is super reliable, maybe be because i have had it since 38k miles on the clock and have looked at it ..... to me having a reliable car is the most important so i would go far a late / low mileage TD6 like i did

If you drive them, the answer may become obvious - I hated the TD6, but the TDV8 is a different beast Thumbs Up

That's what I've been thinking, a low (ish) mileage one, and look after it.

When I previously had a TD6, I never thought it was lacking in power in any way. It's far more about being a luxury limo that can do an astonishing range of off-road tasks, can tow an amazing weight, go through 2 feet of floodwater, up the hills to home in freezing snowy conditions, and yet still be cossetting on a 400 mile trip up to the Highlands, 4 up and loaded.

I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the recent LR/RR 'bling' look, to me it's a bit too common/desperate and shouting 'LOOK AT ME' all the time. The originals are far more discreet. Do have to agree regarding the gearbox though
Hope I didn't offend too many people with that last comment ... if so, my apologies

I agree on the later bling look - much prefer the original. I don't know what Land Rover were thinking when they Rooney-fied it. I guess I shouldn't have written 'looking prehistoric'. I meant in terms of technology.
