Trans Failsafe Mode Error

Ive got a 4.4 v8 petrol with 65000 on the clock

Driving it tonight with no issues and parked up, went into a shop come out and put it in drive made a funny squeal like noise like a noises fan belt then up come Trans Failsafe mode.

I turned it off and back on and it was fine again for a while, i continued my journey and had to come to a stop to pull into a road the car made a clunk and up come Trans fail again

It runs reverse fine, it runs manual mode fine unless u go for kick down or let it act as a auto box.

Am i right in thinking it could be this part??

I saw this in Joes thread im hoping its this

Does anyone know what diagnostic kit would read the gear box fault correctly or is it a trip to the dealers??

Thanks
Neil

It's possible, but really only likely if you are moving from high to low / low to high ratios, which by the sound of it you aren't. It could be the transfer box itself, or worse ( Crying or Very sad ) something in the gearbox.

RRPhil can more likely offer a better explanation of what might be the cause. .

well i still get it into high and low, ive just took it round th eblock twice, its not until u go fromslow to fast or vice versa if that makes sense

Its like driving along and flooring it it over revs like a slip if that makes sense, but in manual mode its fine

My picture shows the rotary potentiometer for the transfer box shift motor. I don’t think that anything in your description particularly points to this being the issue in your case. The transmission P-codes are generally not emission related so a ‘universal’ diagnostic kit won’t decipher them correctly. You’re much better with some dedicated diagnostic kit like Testbook/T4.

John came up with his snap on verdict today

We got the the following codes off it

3B1h/15195 which said unknown

I also had
P0730 which said incorrect gear ratio

P0733 gear 3 incorrect gear ratio

P0732 Gear 2 incorrect ratio

In the transfer box
0x5212 batt under volt

0x52f2 instrument 3 lost from can

After the reset the gearbox showed P0730 again but nothing else

Any idea on this basis's guys
?

If you use Manual mode to set off from rest and then, once you've done the 1-2 upshift, move the selector lever back to 'D' (without increasing the throttle enough to cause it to try to downshift into 1st again) does the transmission then behave correctly in fully automatic mode for the whole period before you next have to stop (or slow down enough to drop back into 1st gear again)?

You'll notice that I'm wondering if it's just 1st gear in automatic mode which is causing the problem.

To be honest I was more thinking that it would be best to rule out the 1st gear sprag unit first – especially as you mentioned a ‘slipping fan belt noise’ when you engaged ‘D’.

When 1st is selected in Manual mode it applies the F-brake, which bypasses the sprag.

If all gears work correctly in Manual mode then I think it’s unlikely to be the ‘standard’ 5HP24 bearing-then-seal failure. Selecting Manual mode would make no difference in that case.

Its like it has a high stall converter fitted, there is a big slip then it locks with a bang, on a simpler box I would describe it as low on fluid or blocked filter. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

Okay, and does it pull away perfectly if Manual 1st is selected rather than 'D' or is the same problem there?

It's brilliant in manual 1st and 2nd 3rd etc

Auto it didn't play up till it was warm and now it's not giving the error just over rev'ing then catching the gear if that despription makes sense

When u put first put it in drive u feel it bit whilst holding the brake and then it re bites but harder feel like a double bite

I have noticed I can control the slip by backing of the accelerator

I've been told that the radiator can rust out causing water to get into the gearbox and cause these sort of symptoms is this true??

If that had happened the fluid would look like a pink cream. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!
