I got an early finish today so I thought I would whip my front bumper off to realign it as it had dropped by about 1cm on the drivers side, that didn't take to long so I thought I would clean the egr valve as iv had problems in the past with them on other cars, it was properly crudded up so gave it a good clean and re-fitted it, iv seen blanking kits on eBay but £40 seems a bit expensive, in the past I have just blocked them off using a bit of 3mm stainless steel, is this not an option on the range rover? Anyway started taking my tools off the scuttle panel and iv dropped an 8mm spanner and can't for the life of me find it, iv had a light and a magnet and can't see it at all, it's not in the undertray so I'm a bit worried, the wife went and did the school run and all seems ok, hopefully it will just fall out on a bumpy road, not sure what else I can do!

I thought I'd lost one of my sockets in my Discovery engine bay, worried about it for about a day, then forgot. Six months later I was lying under the engine about to tighten up the exhaust downpipes ... guess what I found *STILL* attached .. yep, my socket! It hadn't fallen off the nut it was last used to tighten and gravity obviously mis-functioned  Land Rover Addict

I put it in off road height and took the bolts out for the undertray but couldn't get it right off, I really haven't a clue where it is, I'm normally quite good at finding bits I drop as I'm a master at dropping stuff, iv used a torch but no joy, I'm worried it may cause some damage, iv checked around the belts and its not there and like you mention if it comes out at 70mph that won't be good, I'll have to take another look tomorrow

With regard to the egr.
If when you cleaned it out did you notice if the valve was fully closed to the exhaust gas inlet.
If it was no need to blank off anything, just remove the small vacuum hose so that the valve doesn't operate.
The valve will then stay closed to the exhaust gas inlet and effectively blanks the exhaust gases from entering the inlet manifold.

An right thanks for that, think iv got bigger problems now though, just put a new post up about smoke coming from the filler cap so now I'm really worried the engines gone bad

Sorry to hear about your engine issue.
But back to initial issues if you look into the EGR you will see a large amount of the hole is blocked by the valve, this must hinder airflow.
And regarding your lost spanner I misplaced an 11mm socket when working on my 405 diesel early this century. I couldnt find it so gave up and carried on with life. A week later it turned up inside the diff but before ending up there it started off inside the bellhousing and was then picked up by the flywheel and fired through the wall of the bellhousing into the diff which then pushed its spider gear pin into the gearbox housing.
I still have the 11mm socket but its a bit misshapen.
I had the gearbox and diff welded up and flushed the gearset many many times. That car kept going well till my brother inlaw who bought it off me wrote it off.

I had a weird humm on my e39 bm, thought nothing too much of it, when i was checking something in the engine hole i found an 18" snap on pry bar, not mine. Bonus. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Spanner could have fallen into the viscous fan shroud, so nestling at the bottom of the radiator. The shroud not too difficult to loosen/release, but take care as the locating tabs will be quite brittle by now.

Smoky engine - possible oil separator blocked? .

Good shout I'll have a look in the housing, it's had the newer vortex style filter fitted according to receipts but in going to take it off and check, just been to the local Indy who said it will be a ventilation issue and unlikely the engine is goosed, hope he is right, it's booked for the 25th to have the air suspension re calibrated anyway so he will take a look
