any ideas? just tried reversing onto a driveway which is on an incline,not steep just a 'normal' ramped crossover...selected reverse,tried to drive and nothing,just revved up with no drive.I had just been out for a couple of hours driving,no problems at all in all forward speeds,oh,box was rebuilt approx 14k ago...i have only just (7 days !) bought it and am smitten completely and really hoping not to get bitten too hard

Check the wiki for the gear selector cable article. If that doesn't fix it you might be in the Sales Of Goods Act territory with whoever you bought it from.

Now you have it free with WD 40 give it a good coat of grease to protect and lubricate for the future.
Worth checking every year.

funnily enough it has just occurred to me that i used to have exactly that problem with a E61 BMW, it was like it had to think about engaging reverse, and you could rev it in R to no avail, then it would engage, i wonder if this was a similar related problem.

it had the electronic gear selector as well though i think this was just connected to a solenoid which operated the shift. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

..Twas a good move...... Funny enough i 'got out' of my Cayenne Turbo because of impending box problems so really hoping this is something minor....part of the attraction for choosing this particular vehicle was the low (relatively) mileage @73k and a recent box rebuild....thought i had covered my bases

Losing reverse isn’t that common with the later 5HP24s. I’ve never seen an F-clutch piston seal wear problem (which plagued the early BMW/Jaguar versions) on an L322 :

I have the same problem. Car is the same age and model and reverse is "reluctant" when pointing down hill and teh transmission is warm. I had just assumed it was a smidge short of oil, something I asked to be checked when it was services 2 days ago, however they didn't bother to check!
I think I'll get under teh car tonight and smear some grease on! Might do the car whilst I'm there
