Check the wiki for the gear selector cable article. If that doesn't fix it you might be in the Sales Of Goods Act territory with whoever you bought it from.

Now you have it free with WD 40 give it a good coat of grease to protect and lubricate for the future.

funnily enough it has just occurred to me that i used to have exactly that problem with a E61 BMW, it was like it had to think about engaging reverse, and you could rev it in R to no avail, then it would engage, i wonder if this was a similar related problem.

..Twas a good move...... Funny enough i 'got out' of my Cayenne Turbo because of impending box problems so really hoping this is something minor....part of the attraction for choosing this particular vehicle was the low (relatively) mileage @73k and a recent box rebuild....thought i had covered my bases

Losing reverse isn’t that common with the later 5HP24s. I’ve never seen an F-clutch piston seal wear problem (which plagued the early BMW/Jaguar versions) on an L322 :

Fantastic, i will (fingers firmly crossed ) see over the next day or so if it was merely the linkage...if not,then i will have to find a decent indi (forum member??) as my mechanical knowledge is somewhat limited!!
