I decided to put some sound proofing down in my boot as there seems to be a resonance coming from there, probably due to the new exhaust, that wasn't there before. It was actually quite a simple job, even though it appears Halfords don't check their exchanges properly and sold me a roll of soundproofing that was missing a 4x18" section. Fortunately I had calculated that I would have had spare and I'd already unbolted the compressor at this point.

First step was to go through the boot looking for things that had particularly thin walls, fortunately this turned out to only be the floor of the spare wheel well. So I took everything out, unbolted the compressor and cleaned out the dust and debris inside.

Did the whole on my car inside, took ages but was well worth the whisper quiet effect... Just wish i had quieter fans now!

Iirc roofing felt is much cheaper and does te same job but is a bit heavier and not as shiny

I used to cut pieces of Code 6 lead sheet and glue them in place with builders adhesive. Lot cheaper than Halfords and very effective.

Flashing tape / roofing felt is bitchumen based, the butyl stuff is nearly the same price per square metre as the Vibe stuff. Not heard of the lead stuff but it gets hot in there and I'd not be happy about a boot full of lead. Also the boot gets quite warm now so wanted something I know would stick and not stink.

Cam-tech, you're mental! If I could be bothered I probably would have covered it all, but since I have the acoustic foam coming soon, this is enough to reduce vibration and the foam reduces sound. Overall it should perform better and weight less, or at least that's the theory anyway. I'm also looking into different fans for the FFRR as I've noticed as soon as you turn them off the car is whisper quiet.

I did exactly the same thing on the Skoda as i thought the exhaust was a bit noisy at cruise. Used Dynamat. Dead easy to do and made a difference.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

You don't need much lead for it to be effective.
You only need patches approx 150mm x 75mm placed in the centres of panels.
You can still get a lot of lead for £20 without resorting to the Holy variety.
Thinking about the wheel well and resonance, I have to question the need for any added anti-vibration pads to prevent resonance given the mass of the spare wheel
located in it and fixed in place by the threaded rod fixing.
I would have thought the wheel well and surrounding metalwork was more than adequately protected by the spare wheel against any stray resonance which may be why LR appear to have chosen not to treat against it.

Ah, but LR didn't count on the AllSeeingPie fitting the "loudest" exhaust system he could come up with  .

Just because I had the resonators removed on a straight through exhaust doesn't mean it's the loudest I could come up with ... oh er yeah I get your point! In fact I got told off by SWMBO earlier for driving "loudly" and she was 1/4 mile away in Cafe Nero!

I did a 100 mile journey today and it's dramatically reduced exhaust resonance in the cabin, so if you do want a seriously quiet car then it's worth doing.

This has been an experiment for me as designing the side-brance resonators for the exhaust has re-invigorated my appetite for physics. My uncle-in-law is a professional sound engineer (does soundproofing for cinemas and concert halls) and I've always been interested in his work.

Tomorrow I am hoping to adjust the side-branch resonators to remove the last of the motorway drone, although that's just me being picky as I am sure it's a lot quieter than it was before they were installed.

I think for a tunes exhaust yours won't be that bad as its still got the cats in it  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

The cats are 100 cell sports cats, so are roughly 1/5th the size of the LR ones and flow a lot better

Cats are for pussy's! I went the no cat route on my coop and legally as well 3" turbo back exhaust with just a slightly muffled back box to avoid any boom. At full chat and on spool up the thing was monstrous and i only ran base boost still the odd flame from the back proved it was worth it

New MOT regs state that a cat must be visibly fitted from 2012 onwards hence the teeny tiny ones fitted. Also it being a 4.2 litre supercharged motor there's no chance of it passing an MOT without cats.

If I could have got away with a complete de-cat I would though. Oh and mufflers are for pussies, they deflect the air around. You wanted some fat resonators instead.

Some petrols AFTER 92/k reg can pass an MOT easily without breaking any regs and without a cat fitted i know as i did it often enough and corrected examiners that were wrong  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
