The consensus is that it's generally not needed on the petrols. I hit the "Max" program button and it tends to warm within a few mins anyway.

That is exactly true. Big V8 petrol motor puts out much waste heat and heats a large RR interior easily even on the coldest of days. Effecient diesel converts nearly all fuel energy into forward motion and needs help on very cold days with the large RR interior.
