TD6 or TDV8 3.6

Hi everybody,

I was looking for a TD6 but everyone I've spoke to says go for the TDV8 3.6 as it's far better and more reliable, I know the tax is an extra £200 a year on the 3.6 but is that the only down side.

What do you chaps think?

Thanks Smile

If your wallet can handle it get the TDV8 but the TD6 is a good workhorse if you are looking for a bargain.

whats your budget is the best question really??

There are some cheap TD6 Vogues about under the 10k mark but they are much older and may well have had their gearboxes done or about to need doing which is no big problem if you budget for it...

Most TDV8's that are decent are at least £17k+ but more like £20k still...

Cheapest ebay ones are,

You could JUST stretch to a TDV8 then.

My advice would be to get one of the cheaper older ones, get you used to the size and living with ones fuel consumption and normal bills, then chop it after a while, maybe when the snow lands or weather gets worse in a year or less. You will be more prepared for it all then when you trade upto a TDV8 and it will be much nicer inside with all its toys Smile

Just my opinion mind Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I would normally say go for a TDV8, but the cheaper ones are probably cheap for a reason. It may well be worth going for a TD6 with a good warranty or one that has had its gearbox replaced already. You don't want to buy a cheap TDV8 that has expensive problems which ruin you first year of ownership 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

For that sort of money i would go for TD6 as you will get a low milage car that has been looked after.
If you go for the TDV8 then it will probably be a dog and could be looking at large bills for anything that goes wrong and it probably will if your buying a 17k TDV8.

This is my opinion Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue SE Td6 Tonga Green

I had this exact predicament a couple of months ago.

I had a look at several TDV8s in my price range (17-18k) and found they were not in very good condition, used and abused was more the style. I had a look at a fair few ff's and eventually decided to save a few k's for the gearbox issue and went for a vogue se td6 2006my, with quite low mileage in near mint condition.

Im going to get it chipped and the gearbox TCM modded.

I do love it, and think i made the right choice. But the engine is a little under powered and noisy. I would say if you can afford the fuel go for a petrol. Even just the 4.4 is powerful enough and MUCH more refined. I had to go diesel as i make Bio diesel but if i didn't i would have gone the LPG route.

Any way, look around, Read up on what to look for (the wiki is very helpful) and you can get a lovely 80k vehicle for the price of a low end hatchback!

Good luck Thumbs Up

I bought a 2003 TD6 two and a half years ago when the difference between a TDV8 and a TD6 was much bigger. Mine had had the gearbox replaced. Even now I wonder if I made the right decision. If I was buying now I would definitely stretch to the TDV8. I like my car but the engine is really agricultural at times and it's never that refined. On the motorway you're doing nearly 3000rpm which is just too high. It is also really quite slow.

Actually, I'm sort of agreeing with above - get an early TD6 or a good TDV8. Getting a 2006 TD6 makes no sense to me - stretch a bit more and get the V8.

In the uk at least the petrol versions are usually a little cheaper to buy than the diesel counterparts.

3000rpm = about 90mph. 2500 is about 70 for me. I find its most comfortable at 70.

I do agree with KurtVerbose, the td6 is more agricultural than you would like for a luxury vehicle and whilst the 3.6 tdv8 is much better it still is no where near the petrols level of refinement.

I had a 4 cylinder 1.9 tdi (vag engine) befor the rangie and that engine was miles ahead in refinement ( as are all the more modern vag engines imo).

Better smiles per mile, but per gallon? You'd need an awful lot of smiles for that. Laughing

As you know for that budget I would look for a nice 4.4V8 or 4.2V8SC. Just bought another one myself for personal use. Will post soon.
