2019 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Aintree Green

250 bhp doesn't seem much for over £90k. SDV8 has to be the pick - the existing 4.4 is really only adequate and the new one is starting to look lacking alongside the 377 bhp/627 lb/ft VAG 4.2 in the Cayenne Diesel S.

I can't imagine many petrols will get sold over here.

BOTH will sell really well in the used market. The SDV6 really is a great engine but the SDV8 will always reign supreme.

Many Range Rover owners will have always owned a V8 so will stick with it come what may.....

I drove a new 2013 3.0 vogue at my dealer the other day, although the figures offer the same performance in reality it wasn't. It was nice and quiet and was a lovely steady drive which evened out the road better than the current model. However, when I put my foot to the floor it didn't take off like my current 4.4, no kick in the back and even with the car in sport mode, it still felt lacking. The extra £7.5k for the new 4.4 over the 3.0 is quite a difference, but for the extra performance, I must say that I would feel short changed with the 3.0. For my next car, I have to admit I will be looking at the Cayenne 4.2 which comes in at £58k starting price but it will be an awful lot more fun to drive. 2005 L322 Vogue Gold gone

If you are spending 15k a year on depreciation then you can afford the comparitevly minimasl extra cost of the supercharged petrol version if sports performance is a requirement...

Depreciation is the running cost that nobody dares mention, probably because it's too painful, but the increased range of the diesel is a big bonus in this sort of car.

Whilst the Cayenne is a fine vehicle, I would never consider it, though it does give a strong engine benchmark. I have only driven the 4.4 new FF , and it is what personally I would expect in a high end vehicle. I had the the sdv6 in my 2012 MY Sport, and whilst it is a good unit, I would never consider in the FF. Of course personal choices, and the SDV6 will again be the main power unit for the new Sport launched at the end of next year.

I think anyone considering the tdv6 in the FF would be wise to compare power units before spending 90k imho. It will probably be the choice unit for the used market due to slightly better consumpton and lower price, though if you are used to V8 power in current car, you may find you spend a considerable amount of money and feel you are missing the cream on the cake with the tdv6.

I have spoken to a number of journalists who havce compared both. Their view was the tdv6 is a fine unit, the price difference justifies it as a (the) rational choice, and overall it makes for a good car. But all without exception said, if money no issue, then the V8 every time.

Hello all,

Been lurking around the forum for few weeks and have followed with keen interest the various early reviews of the new FF. Apologies in advance for the longish post.
I test drove a SDV8 yesterday at the dealership where I put a deposit few months back. Great car, Causeway grey nice colour, Vogue SE with few extra: 21 wheels/ Alcantara headliner (looked great). Ride was good despite the wheels but would likely stick with 20” as it was a bit harsh on damaged roads (seemingly most of them these days…) Engine sound was great and plenty of torque.
On the negative side: there was a diesel fume smell inside the car as I was driving out of the dealership, couldn’t really explain it as I started the car and drove off but disappeared quickly. The main negative by far is the shocking low resolution of the sat nav screen. In ll the press releases they mention high definition but not sure what standard they are referring to, few years behind Audi/BMW and even Merc. All the more annoying that so many functions are now based on the touch screen. Functionality seems fine but that’s a big negative for such a high end car (few pics from LR themselves...). Likewise the TFT panel offers very little in teh way of customisation, one can't even display the speed in numeric form, only the speedo displays the speed.



My initial thought was to go for the TDV6 and this is the one I have a deposit for. It is a very expensive car for a smaller engine and I hear the point about if money no object V8 has to be the choice. However, I need to drive the TDV6 before deciding, on paper the torque and perf are not that far behind the V8 and the much better economy makes sense along with stop-start, which should really be fitted on the V8 as it would take it down sub 225g in all likelihood.
Maybe the best choice will be the hybrid V6 later on in 2013, the RR press details hint at a sub 7 sec 0-60 with the extra 43bhp, with 169g CO2. Then again it is likely to carry a similar price tag to the V8, no doubt and extra £5k mini from the V6 if current Hybrid offerings from other manufacturers are anything to go by, the hardware is pricey, and technology can go wrong…
I am still on the fence about placing my order as I am concerned about 1st year quality issues and would be tempted to wait for the RR Sport unveiling along with pricing details for the Hybrid.
The RR is a great car but at the price point it needs to be. After driving the V8, I have to say it is a great engine, but properly configured it gets very close to £93k.
On the whole, despite the performance hit the TDV6 still makes sense but I have to drive it. My dealer won’t get a TDV6 demonstrator but will arrange one from their group.
Interestingly my dealer was saying that out of 40 orders/deposits they currently hold, there was pretty much an even split b/w V8 and V6, about 20 V8s, 16 V6s and 4 SCs. The first order call gave them 3 times as many slots for V8s vs V6s. I haven’t yet placed my order but if I did, expected delivery would be around March.

Do not expect great MPG from the SDV6 i have the exact same engine in our Disco and sees at best mixed mileage 29

my TDV8 11.5 RR is showing 27.8 last 900 miles , My Disco is showing 28.2 last 700 miles, FF will has same engine same gearbox as the Disco and i think my Disco is lighter than the New FF. Far to many gone...

Thanks for the heads up tboner001.
I am expecting about 30mpg in real life from the TDV6 vs 25mpg on the V8 but you might well be right the difference might be very small in practice. The Stop/Start does make a difference in town tho (can be annoying if not smooth however, TBD on test drive), which is a decent part of my commute.
Don't think the disco has this but might be wrong.
If I were very optimistic, I would say the RR given the weight difference with the disco should be 15% better ie 32-33mpg, but might just be wishful thinking. In any case a lot better than my E63 AMG which when the stars align, tail wind and on a nice slope might hit 22mpg Shocked
On the weight front the V8 is 200kg heavier so much better engine but also 10% more to move.
