no surprise - give it two years and JLR in britain will be a very very small downsized production plant as it will be much cheaper to build in other location - I am very gutted

Ah, but, remember chaps "Made in Britain/England/UK" still counts for alot around the globe. JLR here is small fry as a global player - they need to expand.

My money's on the next Duffender as "Made in India" - that's when they'll start clawing back from Toyota in Third World / emerging countries . . . .

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Maybe when they're built over there some of the quality control processes that are clearly lacking over here will be improved. Sad news for the UK but sadly other countries can build cheaper and better. We need to up our game otherwise we will continue to see this trend.

JLR have told workers in Solihull that their jobs are safe until at least 2021. Researching my first Range Rover purchase

I doubt they'll really go after that market - they will be a "lifestyle-focused" company largely selling off-road look-alike "leisure" vehicles as urban fashion accessories.

United States 2005 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Chawton White

Had to have seen this coming.

"Made in UK still counts for a lot around the globe".
pardon me while i laugh my ass off.
What it counts for is leak and squeak.
British cars are known around the world for being unreliable as hell, and the only thing worse than a British car is an Italian car.
BMW then Ford were the best things that ever happened to LR.
The STYLE of British vehicles can't be beat.
The execution of that style was never a particularly strong point.

I love my Rovers, and they have a very strong and very loyal following around the globe.
But, to be perfectly honest, they are high-maintenance vehicles, completely unsuited for most of the motoring public. LR is doing everything they can to make them less and less user-repairable.
Which is fine, I understand why.
I didn't buy either of my Rovers new, so LR made nothing from me.
I don't buy parts or supplies from dealers, so LR makes nothing from me.
I understand they have to capture the folks who buy new and use dealers for service; and I also understand that's pretty much everyone on this board.

I also understand why moving the manufacturing out of UK would make some of you guys sad.
I'm buying my daughter a (2012) Jeep Wrangler for her 16th birthday next spring.
That will be the last Jeep we ever buy, as they are going to start making them in Italy. Thank you, Fiat.

Her Wrangler will be our third Jeep.
They just work. Minimum fuss. (in my experience)
I don't have to think about my wife's Grand Cherokee. Ever. At all.
Which is good, since worrying about the Rovers consumes quite a bit of time.
So now Jeeps will be made in Italy. See above note about most unreliable vehicles on the planet.

So we wait and see what the build quality is like for the "Made in India" vehicles.
Worst case, it returns to the Censored quality of 70s-90s Land Rover.
After a few years, they'll figure it out.
I hope. Jim

In my experience Jeep make Land Rover look like a paragon of build quality. Have had the misfortune to use a KK Cherokee - a rubbish car. A Freelander 2 feels twice as expensive and a million times more desirable.
