Replacing cigar lighter with USB charging socket

Just a bit of info which might prove useful to some. If, like us, you have a load of stuff which needs USB charging facilities, these units I found on Amazon have a couple of advantages over the plug in (variable quality) things.

First, they have 2 outlets for USB, 2nd, they have a charge rate of over 2 amps which is enough to charge an IPAD. This is an important point as quite a lot of the plug in things aren't gutsy enough to do this. It charged my Galaxy S2 in a little under an hour, to 100% from 8%.

And 3rd, this will replace one of the factory fitted sockets without too much messing around. The mounting plate is removable leaving just the round part which is secured with a large plastic nut.

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the heads up. been looking at stg like this for myself.

is this enough for an ipad/iphone 4S?

Well, I have 2 of the plug in things which are allegedly rated at 1 amp (1000mA). One will charge the IPAD and the other won't so a proper 1 amp will by the look of things, but if it's 1 amp max as a surge rating then the true RMS output is likely to be about 700mA which isn't enough.

I've found the ratings to be so variable on this stuff which is why I posted this unit. Blue-Sea make a lot of marine gear and it's all top quality, hence the waterproof cover on this one. Not cheap but tested and working on everything I can find which charges via USB. And no need to carry that huge Apple mains based charging block whilst on the move.

And how much of a pain was it to fit? IIRC the cigar lighter comes out from under the gear lever cover? .

OK, I haven't done the car yet. Put one in the caravan and still deciding which one to replace in the car out of the 4 available up front.

But, I have already talent the panel off where the RSE connections live and I mock fitted into one of the OEM holes there and this wasn't difficult. Preference would be to replace the one inside the cubby box so I'll look at that this week.

Blue Sea also make a plug with the same power rating as the socket:

I found the best and easiest solution was a Belkin USB-Accessory socket.

Provides 1000ma of power so enough for iphones and the like and just works a treat and hardly sticks out of the sockets so is very neat Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
